Introduction

The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermons, Vol. XLIX Great Forgiveness for Great Sin (No. 2,863)

There was a daughter, well beloved by her father, who, in an evil hour, left her home, and came to London. Here, having no friends, she soon fell a prey to wicked men, and became an utter wreck. A city missionary met with her, and spoke faithfully to her about her sin, and the Holy Spirit brought her to the Saviour’s feet. The missionary asked for her father’s name and address, and at last she told him; but she said, “It is no use for you to write to him. I have brought such dishonour on my family, that I am quite certain he would not reply to any letter.” They wrote to the father, and stated the case, and the letter that came back bore on the envelope, in large text hand, the word “Immediate.” Inside, he wrote, “I have prayed every day that I might find my child, and am rejoiced to hear of her. Let her come home at once. I have freely forgiven her, and I long to clasp her to my bosom.” Now, soul, if thou seekest mercy, this is just what the Lord will do with thee. He will send thee mercy marked “Immediate,” and thou shalt have it at once. I

When we look at Today’s teaching about the atonement, I want you to mark this doctrine as Immediate. This will help you see that your father is going to love you.

Text

John 10:1–30 ESV
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” 19 There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” 22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

Background

This text takes place around now in the the Time-line. Jesus was in Jerusalem for Hanukkah, and he taught some of the most startling truths.
He shares his mission: John 10:17-18
John 10:17–18 ESV
17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
He shares his identity John 10: 28-31
John 10:28–31 ESV
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him.
He teaches that he will save men and women, not may John 10:28
John 10:28 ESV
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
We learn in this text so much, but our focus is that his sacrifice on the cross doesn’t potentially save but actually saves.
This brings is to the doctrine of Definite Atonement
Living for God’s Glory: An Introduction to Calvinism Biblical Support for Definite Atonement

The Bible vividly describes what Christ did on the cross: He made a sacrifice; He made propitiation; He reconciled His people to God; He guaranteed the redemption of His own; He gave His life a ransom for many (but not all); He bore the curse of those for whom He died.

The reality that he came to save, that he will save, that he will cleanse men and women of their sins causes people to pick up rocks to kill him. John 10:31
John 10:31 ESV
31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him.
This Idea that God died to actually save people, not potentially can cause this kind of consternation.

Application:

1) His salvation actually secures you, not potentially

Living for God’s Glory: An Introduction to Calvinism Biblical Support for Definite Atonement

. Christ must be a full Savior because sinners are spiritually dead and cannot independently receive a Christ presented to them. Though Christ has merited everything, God’s people know that they have no legs to run to Him, no arms to embrace Him, no lips to kiss Him. He must do everything—both the meriting and the applying. Thus, He receives all honor and glory as the Alpha and Omega for His own.

Your sin has left you spiritaully dead, so Jesus actually works on your behalf to make you alive.
You may remember your life before Christ. Only his love could bring you to his side.
You may remember your sin only he could bring you out of that!

2) Your Sharing is not a role of the dice but is guaranteed to work.

John 10:15 ESV
15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
These sheep are out there, they know his voice
John 10:3–4 ESV
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
You will call

3) Know your sheep

The cross was Nessacry for the Salvation of Men

Hebrews 9:22 ESV
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

What it accomplishes

The Son of man was required to make what’s called the Penal Substitutionairy Atonement.
That’s theological terminology for taking upon his own body God’s full hatred of sin onto himself in our place.
I’m going to lay out what he did so that you can understand the weight of his actions and so if anyone asks you for why you believe you maybe able to defend it.
You could say that Jesus did 3 actions here
Works of John Owen: Volume 10 (Chapter IX: Being a Second Part of the Former Digression—Arguments to Prove the Satisfaction of Christ)
First, That Christ took and bare our sins, God laying them on him. (Took them willingly)
Secondly, That he so took them as to undergo the punishment due unto them. (suffered the wrath, shame, and death)
Thirdly, That he did this in our stead.(Place)
To prove he took them willingly look at the text.
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Isaiah 53:11–12 ESV
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
He willingly took our place. Talk about God so loving the world. contemplate the merciful compassion of our saviour!
2. To Prove he received our punishment, the wrath we should have gotten
Genesis 2:17 ESV
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Adam had sinned and that was death for him and his raise a punishment we all deserve
Romans 5:12 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
He suffered the death we should have.
He took on the curse of breaking God’s law
Deuteronomy 27:26 ESV
26 “ ‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Hebrews 2:9 (ESV)
9 so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
Romans 8:32 ESV
32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
Isaiah 53:10 ESV
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Galatians 3:13 ESV
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
He took the punishment we deserved.
He took our place
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
He gave us by swapping himself for us his own righteousness

Application:

1. Love for us

A penal substitutionary understanding of the cross helps us to understand God’s love, and to appreciate its intensity and beauty. Scripture magnifies God’s love by its refusal to diminish our plight as sinners deserving of God’s wrath, and by its uncompromising portrayal of the cross as the place where Christ bore that punishment in the place of his people. If we blunt the sharp edges of the cross, we dull the glittering diamond of God’s love.

So we are to do likewise and love one another with this kind of love.

2. Truthfulness of God

A Second application is that by Christ saying he was going to do this and he did we can know that God is trurthfuk

In this way, the cross of Christ establishes that all of God’s word is true. If God refused to break his word in this most extreme of cases, we can trust him in every other situation. The torment of the cross stands as a monument to the unchanging truthfulness of God’s word:

Psalm 33:4 ESV
4 For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.

3. Legally Righteous

You are now covered in the righteousness of God. Think of it this way you’re clothed in Christ’s righteousness.
You’re legally declared sinless before God. The punishment has been met out for you, you can never experince God’s wrath

4. Gives a real understanding or our sin
