The Theme and The Text
The Theme and The Text
The Theme you have chosen states “Men Accounted Worthy”. Luke 21:36 says
“But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
This text that has been chosen for exposition contains within it a message that is both pertinent and relevant to believers in this postmodern culture. But in order to truly hear what the Lord is trying to tell us this afternoon, we will need to do three things. The first thing we need to do is to Explain the Text; Next, we need to Illustrate it, and Finally, we must apply the text.
The Text Explained
The Text Explained
in the text, Jesus is still preparing his disciples for their mission. They are currently located in Jerusalem, the city of the King. This was His Jerusalem, His city, for He was in fact the King. The disciples are adoring the magnificance of the temple when Jesus says to them “Every brick in this building will fall”.
See Luke 21:5-6
And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said,
“As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.”
They were alarmed and began asking Him “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming. May I suggest today that this issue of the Lord’s return is what really gives rise to this text.
Everywhere we turn, we hear all kinds of conversations. People are talking about #45, North Korea, Nuclear War, Hurricane Season 2018, the Massacre in Las Vegas, Race relations, etc. I would submit that what I don’t hear too much conversation about is the second coming of the Lord Jesus.
The text says that the manifestation of the signs are present as a constant reminder that the Lord is coming again. One of the problems of the day for the Christian Church is that it has assimilated the worldview that if something does not happen immediately, it will not happen at all.
A deeper look at the text reveals some startling language that we cannot ignore and pass over as insignificant. The Lord tells his disciples that “this generation will not pass away until all things are fulfilled.” Generation can be thought of in terms of any group of people born near the same time. According to the Dictionary of Bible Themes a generation is the population as a whole at any one time, or the interval of time separating parents and children. This means that we need to discover how this text relates to us concerning the Second Coming of the Lord.
We do know that this scene is an actual discussion that was had between the Man Christ Jesus and his disciples. He said to them that his earthly ministry would cause his death, and that his death would result in his resurrection, and that his resurrection would solidify His Throne.
See Luke 18:31-33
Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.
“For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon,
and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again.”
