Overview of Philippians

I have always adored the Book of Philippians
My sermon prep software says in the last 2 years
29 of my sermon manuscripts had a Philippians Reference
I love this Book, and i am sure that i have read it more and studied more in this Book than any other.
i was not raised in a happy childhood
there was too much anger around me always
the push to excel beyond reality
BUT Philippians touched my heart when i came to Christ.
So many wonderful verses in this Book
So many that you all know and hear regularly.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Then Paul wishing for your love to abound more and more …
to be pure and blameless
— filled with the fruit of righteousness
to encourage us in times of challenge...
Philippians 1:12 ESV
12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel,
Philippians 1:21 ESV
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Philippians 1:27 ESV
27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,
Philippians 2:2–3 ESV
2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Philippians 2:4–9 ESV
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
Paul prays and warns us that DOGS will come among us to side track us from the WAY, the Truth, and the Life.
Paul then encourages us again to PRESS ON
Philippians 3:13–14 ESV
13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:1 ESV
1 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.
Philippians 4:4 ESV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
To dealing with anxiety
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Teaching us how to think as a Christian
Philippians 4:8 ESV
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
To reminding us where we get all our strength from daily
Philippians 4:13 ESV
13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
You see the Book of Philippians is about JOY in Christ
The idea of rejoicing occurs more than 16 times in the short book of Philippians.
Philippians is often known as the “Epistle of Joy” because of Paul's attitude in prison.
Rejoicing in every circumstance
and finding joy amidst trials is a major theme.
_________________________________________
The Philippian Church was a church of joy
they had their issues of course
The Philippian church was located in the ancient city of Philippi, which is in northeastern Greece:
Philippi was a key location on the Egnatia Way, an ancient road that connected Europe and Asia.
It was also a Roman colony, and its government and customs were modeled after Rome.
The Philippian church was the first Christian church in Europe.
It was known for its loyalty to the Paulian tradition and served as a model for other local churches.
The Apostle Paul and Timothy are believed to have written the Epistle to the Philippians
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
In Revelation, the church of Philadelphia is one of seven churches in Asia to which Jesus wrote letters.
The church is known for its brotherly love and patience.
Jesus praises the church for keeping his word and not denying his name.
He promises to keep the church from the hour of trial that will come upon the world
Revelation 3:7–13 (ESV)
7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.
8 “ ‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.
10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
..............................................................
Paul writes this letter late in his life
likely in the 60s
20 years after the first letters
It is important to note the focus of Paul
Partnership
Humility
Endurance
Steadfastness
Love
it is my prayer that in the next weeks you will see this deeper than ever before.
Can we be a church that models the Mission of Christ?
if we are we need to be a community of Believers
that seek the things of Christ above all things
To Model Christ
to be SelfLESS
To endure through all things
To Focus on Christ
We have studied the God man of Jesus
and heard the Commission of us to GO and Make Disciples
and today we start to look at the work of the church
thirty years after the Resurrection of Jesus.
finish with study — this study of joy
in beginning — remind of Mission — Vision for Horizon
then we begin in depth study of the book for 1 cor.
seeking to understand the unity that is needed in the church today
What is important in LIVING in Christ
our first KEY

Partnership

Paul wants to make it very clear from the start that
We are NOT ALONE
We have CHRIST, THE CHURCH, and OTHERS around us in our Walk
they are always there for you
Paul writes this letter to the SAINTS — the believers
Paul is specific in his audience
and if you are here today === I pray you are a SAINT
Living for Christ
And Paul has a mission made FOREFRONT
To advance the Gospel
to build the Body of Believers
Paul will use variations of the TERM
IN CHRIST
This is the Partnership
Christ in US, and US in Christ
Paul is writing this letter to ENCOURAGE
to Show the Joy that we can have in Struggles
To remind us to Focus on Christ in ALL THINGS at ALL TIMES
Paul prays for GROWTH in each of US
and the Growth has no stopping point
It is our life long pursuit
May you make the commitment to
DIVE Deeply in this short study
I pray that you use the notes during the week to study
generate questions
and USE this to GROW yourself
Our mission ==== To GLORIFY GOD, by Growing Others in Christ Jesus
