And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Theme: Celebration of the Believers Security.
I. Culmination of the Believer’s Security (confidence).
Paul states that because of what is written from Romans chapter 5 up till not that the believers should have confidence in their eternal security.
Example Romans 5:1-5 states:
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Chapter 6 says:
For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Chapter 7 says:
I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
Now we come down to the culmination of these 4 chapters in which Paul says in verse 28.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
How do we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose?
Because of all the Lord has done for us. What has Jesus done for us? He died for us and shed his blood for the remission of our sins. Through our faith in his work…..not faith in our own dead works. But through faith in his works…..I am justified. (All the believers in the house tell someone Jesus justified me!).
He has given me access into this grace (undeserved by the way….because nothing I’ve done has caused me to be in this place of undeserved favor. I’m here because he called me to be here…..I’m here because He willed it…..I couldn’t do it…..but he did it for me……AND IF I CAN BE QUITE FRANK AND HONEST IN HERE….HE’S STILL DOING IT……STILL KEEPING ME……STILL STRENGTHENING ME…..STILL CHANGING ME….STILL WORKING ON ME.
AND BECAUSE OF THESE THINGS…..I CAN CONFIDENTLY LOOK FORWARD TO SHARING IN GOD’S GLORY. WHAT GLORY? JESUS WAS GLORIFIED WHEN HE WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD!
THE BELIEVERS HOPE IS NOT THAT WE GET NEW HOUSES, NEW CARS, NEW JOB, THAT THE PAIN WOULD GO AWAY, THAT WE RECEIVE HEALING….I KNOW THAT HEALING IS THE CHILDREN’S BREAD. BUT THE BELIEVERS HOPE IS THAT WE WILL SHARE IN GOD’S GLORY.
If you wanted to get the saints stirred up in the early church all the apostles needed to do was to talk about the future hope and future glory……the hope of the believers.
That’s why Paul said we can rejoice too when we run into to problems and trials. Because all our problems and trials do is make us better, it makes us stronger, it brings us closer to God.
Then Paul says we know how much that God loves us because “Love is shed in our hearts by the Holy Ghost.” And when God filled us with the Holy Ghost…..he filled our hearts with His love.
POINT:
And if you know that God loves you…..do you have faith to believe that God is going to cause everything to work together for good? Do you have faith to believe that some kind of way……everything is going to work together according to his purpose?
II. The Believer’s Call.
It’s going to work out because God has called you. Its going to work out because Psalms declares in faith:
The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.
Before the world was even created he chose me, and when he chose us…..he chose us to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn. Let me stop there…..because there are two theological trains of thought. The word firstborn from the Old Testament thought is referring to the Messiah. But secondly, the word firstborn is referring to the resurrection. It is the same as being the first-fruit.
There had been many resurrections in scripture. But Jesus was different. The resurrections prior those individuals died again. They had the same bodies. When Jesus was resurrected he had a spiritual body. No, he was not a ghost, has body was not made of flesh but of spirit.
John said:
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
He had a spiritual body but could be touched. He was the first to receive this spiritual body that would no longer be subjected to death or decay.
And you need to understand that God chose you from the foundation of the earth to be conformed…..to be made into the image of His Son! This transformation
