Matthew 4:18–20 “18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Jesus went to them. He didn’t wait for them to find Him, He went to where they were.
First, He saw them. He deliberately noticed people who needed Jesus.
Second, He went to them.
2. He interacted with them. He asked them to follow. How can people respond when they have never been asked.
You cannot respond to a question you have not been asked.
3. He told them what He would do with them.
4. They responded to the call.
Jesus shows us what we need to do to become people who reach and restore others and then
reproduce and release them into Jesus’ mission.
● Come, which is to experience a relationship with him.
● Follow, which is to be transformed to be like him.
● Fish, which is to be on a mission by leading others to him.
This means we are called to be with Jesus, to be more like Jesus, and to lead others to Jesus. And all of
this is done in a community of discipleship. It is that simple—and that profound.

0 - Apathy
When we sit in a place of apathy towards unbelievers it reveals that we are unaware of the call of a Christian, hostile to God’s Church (We make it about us), we are living in blatant disobedience to God.
Genesis 12:2–3 “2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.””
We are blessed with the gospel so that we can bless others with the gospel.
The BLESS Practices and the FRANCES prayer list.
BLESS
Begin with Prayer. Pray for those in your sphere of influence whom you can bless.
Listen. Listen to their concerns, their story, and their spiritual interests first.
Eat. Build relationships over meals or coffee. This one is everybody’s favorite!
Serve. Care for them and let them care for you.
Share. Now, you can share your story with Jesus and the story of Jesus’ love for them.

Re-calibrating Our Mission to God’s Mission (Homework)
Passage 1: Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
Luke 19:1–10 “1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.””
Questions:
What stands out most to you in this passage about the mission of Jesus?
What implications might these observations have for our mission as a church?
Zacchaeus
He was looking for Jesus (Eternity was hidden in his heart)
He quickly responded to the invitation of Jesus
He righted relationships
Jesus
Jesus went to that place on purpose - He went to Zaccheaus.
He saw Zaccheaus - a man who needed to be saved
He spent time with him - going to his house, enjoying a meal.
He offered salvation.
Other Followers
They complained. Other “Christians” will always find ways to complain about people who go to the lost. Who are committed to living on mission. There will always be resistance - but you don’t need to complain about them. Jesus didn’t.
Passage 2: Jesus in the Synagogue at Nazareth
Luke 4:16–21 “16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.””
Questions:
What does this passage add to our understanding of the mission of Jesus?
Jesus offers more than an entrance to heaven. There is a the gift of liberation from effects of sin.
What implications might these observations have for our mission as a church?
We need to preach the need for liberation, the effects of sin, and how Christ can offer liberation to us.
Jesus
He intentionally did this in Nazareth, His home town, where He was known.
He found the exact verse He wanted and read nothing else.
He purposely caught their attention in what He read
God’s Spirit is upon me.
He has anointed me to
Proclaim good news to the poor.
proclaim liberty to the captives
recovery of sigh to the blind
liberty to the oppressed
proclaim the year of the Lords favor.
He purposes stopped reading, gave no exposition, but let God’s word stand.
He claimed to be the Christ in saying scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.
Passage 3: The Great Commission
Matthew 28:18–20 “18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
Questions:
What does this passage add to our understanding of the mission of Jesus?
That He came to offer a relationship with Him (Come) that would transform our lives (Follow) so that we are more like Him. As we become more like Him we are called to live on mission (Fish) by leading others to Him.
What implications might these observations have for our mission as a church?
We should understand the pathway we are on in our relationship with Jesus. We should be diligent, not to get distracted, to waist time, or make excuses about moving to the next step.
Our pathway is come to Jesus, Follow Jesus, Fish for Jesus.
Jesus
Again, Jesus came to them.
He claimed to have all authority which He also demonstrated in the resurrection and living with resurrection power for 40 days among the disciples (Phil. 2:9-11 - God exalted him to the highest place. Eph. 1:20-22 - Seated at the right hand placing all things under his feet, Rev. 1:17-18 - John see’s Jesus in heaven, Luke 24: 31, 36-37 - Jesus appears and disappears at will and seems to demonstrate an ability to be present in different places instantly, John 20:19-20 - transcends physical barriers by appearing with the doors locked, John 21:6 - miraculous catch of fish, Acts 1:8-9 - He ascends to heaven demonstrating authority over the earthly realm, Acts 9:3-5 - appears to Saul on the road to Damascus.)
The call for the believer
Go to them
Make disciples - proclaim the gospel
baptize them - as a proof of their confession
Teach them all I have commanded you (Follow - teach what you are learning).
I will be with you through the process.
Passage 4: Jesus Appears to His Disciples
John 20:19–21 “19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.””
Questions
What does this passage add to our understanding of the mission of Jesus?
He wants us to know His resurrection is not a story, it’s reality. Showing the disciples his hands and sides until they new it was Him. With proof of His resurection, He sends us just as the Father sent Him in Luke 4:16-21
What implications might these observations have for our mission as a church?
Because we know that Jesus is alive, we can know that we are personally called by Him to build His kingdom.
Jesus
The doors being locked shows His ability to pass through material things. Demonstrating of form of power he did not show until now.
Again Jesus came to where they were.
He did not want them to be frightened.
He wanted them to know they were to live on mission just has He has. That He is personally sending them out in the same way He was sent out.
To restore, to seek and to save the lost.
