Intro

skipping around in the prophets to the ones that you are least likely to have read before
a babylonian prophet as in, right before babylon takes over everything
Can God use evil for good?
Is it okay to question God?

Questioning God

the intro is simply Habakkuk frustrated and confused approaching God
this is a place that I figure most people find their selves in front of God
Why would you do this and why me?
don’t you see the wickedness happening in your creation?
God is reluctant to answer and that always seems weird and has always to me but I heard something that helped me understand
“a work you would not believe”
the Chaldeans are awful and they are just what I need to make the world understand that YHWH is in control
Habakkuk will sit frustrated and wait for a real answer
almost like a pouting child

Spoilers Ruin Stories

God has a point in not telling everyone the answer to everything
most of the time, it will just ruin the story
God wants you to trust that he is in control, even without knowing every answer
“the righteous shall live by faith” occurs here and then Paul quotes it in several of his letters
blessed are those who have not seen and still believe is what Jesus will say
but Habakkuk is not satisfied so God will give him a glimpse of the story
God speaks of these woes and the ESV titles it to the Chaldeans
but it seems he’s meant to be speaking about the evils of the Jews as well
that they are just as deserving of punishment and unrepentant

Rejoicing in the Unknown

knowing even just a little bit now, Habakkuk changes his tone and for the better
he seems gloomy but the end is the important part
an interesting call back to Noah and the flood
that God works to restore things, even when the best way to do that is to use chaos and destruction
whatever comes, I rejoice in God who gives me strength and purpose and sight

Application

its easy to be frustrated by the thought of an all powerful and all knowing God who asks his people to talk to him but then never answers directly the way we ask
if there really were a God he would answer my prayers all the time
sometimes the answer isn’t something you can understand right now
sometimes the answer isn’t something you would believe even if you had it
Life is always better and more filled with contentment when I trust God’s story as he works for redemption and hope
