Proposition - As we continue in our study we are going to see: 1) the introduction to David, 2) the introduction to the Philistine, and 3) the reaction of the brothers.
Interrogative question - How are you responding to the challenges that you face each and every day?

1. The introduction to David - vs. 20-22

1 Samuel 17:20–22 NASB95
20 So David arose early in the morning and left the flock with a keeper and took the supplies and went as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the circle of the camp while the army was going out in battle array shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines drew up in battle array, army against army. 22 Then David left his baggage in the care of the baggage keeper, and ran to the battle line and entered in order to greet his brothers.
Why does David get up early? (refer back to vs. 17ff)

17:20 David must have left very early in order to have made the fifteen mile journey in time to see the army … marching out.

What do you we learn about David’s character in these verses?
What does David observe when he gets there?
What does David do once he drops off his baggage?
Why do you think David “Ran”?

2. The introduction to the Philistine - vs. 23-24

1 Samuel 17:23–24 NASB95
23 As he was talking with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the army of the Philistines, and he spoke these same words; and David heard them. 24 When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were greatly afraid.
Who is David talking with according to vs. 23?
How do you think the Israelites responded when the Philistine came up?
What did He (the Philistine) say? (look at previous verses)
How did the people react? (if you were in their shoes how might you respond?)

3. The reaction of the brothers - vs. 25-30

1 Samuel 17:25–30 NASB95
25 The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who is coming up? Surely he is coming up to defy Israel. And it will be that the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.” 26 Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?” 27 The people answered him in accord with this word, saying, “Thus it will be done for the man who kills him.”
How did the Israelites relay the information to David? (can you imagine what their facial expressions might have been like?)
What was going to be done for the man who defeats the Philistine?
Why do you think that the individual who defeats him will get some nice gifts?

17:26–27 David’s words indicate he had not heard the announcement from Saul’s assistant (v. 25). The word disgrace is related to defy (vv. 10, 25–26, 36). Uncircumcised denotes someone outside God’s covenant. David saw the threat as not merely political (cp. v. 8) but theological. The armies of the living God, ironically, were terrified, but to David, God’s honor was at stake.

17:25 the man who defeats him, the king will make him very rich with This man would receive three benefits: riches, Saul’s daughter in marriage, and his extended family would be free from taxation.

1 Samuel 17:25–30 NASB95
28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burned against David and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart; for you have come down in order to see the battle.” 29 But David said, “What have I done now? Was it not just a question?” 30 Then he turned away from him to another and said the same thing; and the people answered the same thing as before.
How did David’s brother react?
Why do you think he reacted this way?
SO WHAT?
How are you responding to the challenges that you face each and every day?
