Immorality Defiles the Church

so looking back at previous chapters the church Of Corinth was dealing with serious divisions
they were not being good stewards Of the Mysteries of God as it said it Chapter 4 vs 1
they were so caught up in themselves and the leaders they associated themselves with
they were a gifted bunch of people but a prideful people
Paul was reeling them in in the first 4 chapters and now in chapter 5 he’s going to call them out
He’s going to expose just how far off their pride and evil got them
So the first report that Paul dealt with is the divisions , now this second report he is going to deal with is Incest, “ Sexual immorality”
So lets get right into it
1st Corinthians ch 5
1 Corinthians 5:1 “1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife!”
so in the NLT version it says step mom , no one really knows for sure wether it was a stepmom or actual mother
either way this sexual sin was incest
this sexual sin was a sin that not even the pagan worshiping gentiles would do !
incest was laid out very clearly in the old testament as a big no no!
Leviticus 18:6–8 “6 ‘None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness: I am the Lord. 7 The nakedness of your father or the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover. She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness.”
Leviticus 20:11 “11 The man who lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.”
these people had gotten to a place where they were okay with a member of the church sinning
a member of the church sleeping with His mother
perhaps this member of the church was someone who was important
someone that everyone would be okay with turning a blind eye
why would anybody allow that ?
lets keep reading
SIN SHOULD BE GRIEVED NOT EXCUSED
1 Corinthians 5:2 “2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.”
so instead of grieving for the sin that was openly obvious to the church
they were puffed up about how open they were as a church
talk about church’s that are “open to worldly ways”
we are called to do the exact opposite of tolerate when it comes to the body of christ
SIN SHOULD BE GRIEVED NOT EXCUSED
Galatians 6:1–2 “1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
we believers should be grieved over sin within the body not puffed up about excusing it with fake grace !
instead of dealing with the sin and getting rid of it , they tolerated it !
tolerating sin is agreeing with sin, we will talk more about it
1 Corinthians 5:3 “3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed.”
so Paul of course is the one addressing the church
though he is not physically there , he is there in spirit
He is Judging the church from far off
now some of us may read this and think , well judgement is a sin and we aren’t suppose to judge others
yes part of that is true,BUT !
As believers we are not to Judge peoples motives , or their ministries
for example
Matthew 7:1–5 “1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
you see judging someones motives is like saying you can predict what they are going to do, and the heart behind it
you can’t , often we hear people judging other peoples motives and being totally negative about it
i’m sure you all know someone who is quick to jump to conclusions about something
its wrong to Judge motives
and again its wrong to judge ministries
1 Corinthians 4:5 “5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.”
people will have opinion after opinion, judgement after judgement , but guess what , its not our place to judge a ministry
God is the one who grants the authority so if you have a problem with how something is being done within a ministry, keep it to yourself or deal with it in person
SO as believers what are we suppose to Judge ?
were suppose to judge our conduct, and to be honest about our conduct
1 Corinthians 5:4 “4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,”
1 Corinthians 5:5 “5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”
Discipline is necessary within the church
someones actions like this Man sleeping with his stepmother requires discipline within the church
it is our duty to discipline those actions and that kind of conduct
we can not just let it slip by because someone is in a position of power
or because someone is our friend
letting sin go by without properly dealing with it is agreeing with it
sitting in silence like these people did, is them agreeing that the sin this man was openly committing was okay
now public sin like this should also be publicly dealt with
Matthew 18:15–20 “15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. 18 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.””
sin needs to be called out not swept under a rug
it needs to be dealt with
( Share the Hill song documentary ) Karl Lentz
another thing , when sin is dealt with , sometimes literally kicking people out to let them go partake in sin is the very thing they need to be delivered from their sin
it must be done in a Godly biblical way , but it must be done
you see with sin, especially sexual sin , when we are so caught up in it , we get to a point where there is nothing anyone can do or say to change the heart
so thats what we see here, Paul is saying to give that person over to their sin
people must become so consumed by their sin and get to a place of being sick and tired of it that it changes their heart and turns them to the Lord
the flesh must self destruct if there is to be any change of the heart
keep in mind this is a biblical principal, not something Paul made up, God warns us of what is in our hearts
what is in our hearts comes out eventually especially if it is swept under the rug
Our God is extremely long suffering , but there is also a point where he will give us over to the desires that are in our heart , when we resist His promptings and insist on sinning , He will give us over to that sin
lets take a look at the example Paul gave us and see that it is a biblical principal and not just something he randomly said
lets look at Romans ch 1
Considering Paul wrote to the Roman church, and speaking to the unrighteous which is everyone , Starting in vs 24
Romans 1:24 “24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,”
Romans 1:26 “26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.”
Romans 1:28 “28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;”
So again Paul calling it for what it is, exposing the sin and confronting the sin is necessary for growth not only within the church but for individuals as well
Again Galatians 6:1–2 “1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
we should help bring others back to christ, if that means tough love then that means tough love
1 Corinthians 5:6 “6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?”
okay so we already know that these people turned a blind eye to the sin that was infecting them , but now they are bragging about it
bragging at how they show love instead of dealing with the sin
that is the most unloving thing a person could do
this man needed truth not fake grace
its crazy how just a little sin can influence an entire group
same is true today as well
a little leaven, a little dough left over has the ability to cause the whole loaf to grow, a little bit of left over yeast and bam its grown
its the same thing with sin within the body of christ
a little bit of sin that is allowed and un-dealt with can cause a-lot of sin to grow out of control
all it takes is a little and the next thing you know everyone is affected by it
now each and everyone of you is a member of the body of christ and if each and everyone of you have sin in your life that can directly impact those around you, it can impact a-lot more than you realize
1 Corinthians 5:7 “7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”
1 Corinthians 5:8 “8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
so every year they would purge out the old leaven (yeast)that they would use to make bread and they would start from scratch
and the idea here was health related , they didn’t want to become sick and infected by old yeast so they got rid of it
now thats the same today in the church when it comes to sin and infected members
sinners that continue to sin and want to live in sin and are un-repentant , are people we want to purge from our life
church’s go through purges at times ,
people at church need to be dealt with at times,
and people need to purge the things in their life at times
correction within the church is healthy and necessary for growth !
Christ Jesus was sacrificed for us , we should be a fresh batch of dough !
Matthew 5:30 “30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
what ever is causing sin or causing others to sin get rid of it cut it out of your life !
Purge it , purge your house of malice and evil and celebrate it with sincerity and truth
all this to say for the sake and hope that one day they will return to the Lord !
DON’T BE A FAKE
1 Corinthians 5:9 “9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.”
He is not talking about outsiders here , and he’s not saying that we cant be frineds with people who are sinners
1 Corinthians 5:10 “10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.”
we cant avoid this , we cant avoid dealing with sinners
its all part of our world
1 Corinthians 5:11 “11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.”
Paul is talking about people who call themselves believers
you see what Paul is saying here is not to mix ourselves in with people that call themselves believers that are practicing things like
sexual immorality ,
greediness ,
idolaters ( people who worship idols )
verbally abusive ( people who are verbally abusive
a person who is a swindler ( deceptive)
these are the people we want to avoid
and as believers God gives a level of discernment , you can see the people who Paul warns us about here very clearly
People either walk in the Light or they walk in darkness , there is no in-between
1 Corinthians 5:12 “12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside?”
yes as believers it is our duty to judge others inside the church when it comes to their sin, remember sin is not something we sweep under the rug , its something we deal with
now outsiders, the people living in the world, we do not judge , God judges them
1 Corinthians 5:13 “13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.””
So God judges the outsiders , not us
we as believers must remove those that are among us that are evil
1) Over all Sin should be grieved not excused
2) Discipline is Necessary within the church
3) Turn over to sin
4) Don’ t Be fake
