Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider exploring the historical and cultural context of 2 Timothy using Logos to gain insights into the specific challenges the early church faced. Look into various commentaries that address the pastoral epistles, particularly any that discuss the implications of being in the 'last days.' Additionally, examine the Greek terms used in verses 1 and 2 for a deeper understanding of Paul’s descriptions of character traits during this time.

1. Prepare for Perilous Times

2 Timothy 3:1-5
In these first 5 verses the Apostle Paul paints a picture for us of how the last days will look like. It is not only a picture of the world but also within the church itself. This warning to Timothy did not come by surprise for Timothy he was seeing this kind of immoral behavior in Ephesus everyday. Timothy had his hands full with these people verses 2 and 3 describes them perfectly. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, without gentleness, without love for good,
4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
(do see any of these things on this list happening today in America?)
it is hard for people to give up their wordly lives to come and follow Christ. And when they do it is ever so hard to keep them from slipping back into that lifestyle.
In verse. 5 “ holding to a form of godliness, but having denied its power. Keep away from such men as these.” What is Paul speaking about here when he says “having a form of godliness?” In Titus 1:16 “They profess to know God, but by their works they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and unfit for any good work.” These are the men that come to church on Sunday morning but on Friday night there in the bar getting drunk. They are the ones that act one way in church or around their Christian friends then there living an immoral life elsewhere. The Apostle Paul warns us to stay away such people. Notice here that Paul is not talking about a person that slips up every know and then because none of us are perfect, he is warning about the one who acts like the they are the best thing going in the church house and then the rest of the week there living detestable lives.

2. Persevere Amidst Deceptions

2 Timothy 3:6-9
In this section, you could focus on how deception creeps into the church through false teachings and impostors. This can be a call to vigilance, urging believers to stay rooted in the teachings of Christ and aware of deceptive influences. Highlight how Christ models the truth and purity that combats falsehood. Encourage the congregation to develop discernment through Scripture, recognizing the true teachings of Christ, to withstand such deceptive times.

3. Persist Through Persecution

2 Timothy 3:10-13
You could encourage personal reflection on the examples set by mentors and leaders in faith, much like Timothy observed Paul. This is an opportunity to emphasize the importance of Christ-like living and endurance through persecution. Remind listeners that persecution is part of the journey for those who live godly lives in Christ. Encourage them to embrace suffering for the Kingdom, assured of Christ's ultimate victory and presence in their trials.

4. Proclaim the Power of Scripture

2 Timothy 3:14-17
Conclude with perhaps the most powerful assertion of the passage: the sufficiency of Scripture. Encourage the audience to view the Bible as God's inspired gift, providing wisdom and training for righteous living. Stress the centrality of Christ in all Scripture, as He is the wisdom and truth that all believers need. Challenge the congregation to invest deeply in understanding and applying Scripture, allowing it to transform their lives as they stand firm in their faith.
