Oral Roberts was asked one time “How do I go about learning to hear God speak to me? he replied wanting it badly enough to work on it.”
You will not learn much about the spiritual world until you take time to be quiet and fix your eyes on Jesus who is in you.
Relating to the spiritual world takes as much time and effort as relating to the physical world
Writing down your prayers and what you believe God is speaking helps to sort out your thoughts vs God’s voice.
We can see how important it is to write down what we are seeing with our heart. Habakkuk 2:2-3 Revelation 1:10-11
Habakkuk 2:1–3 ESV
1 I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. 2 And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. 3 For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.
Stillness - quite yourself down
Vision - fixing your eyes on Jesus
Spontaneity - turning to the river thats coming out of our heart by the Holy Spirit
Writing it down
Revelation 1:10–11 ESV
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”
We can go back and later analyze if it was God speaking to us by comparing it against scripture, spiritual advisors, and the like.
Safeguards for Journaling and hearing the voice of God:
Make sure we are being humble and have a teachable spirit. Never allow a attitude of “God told me, and thats all there is to it.” All revelation is to be tested.
Have a good knowledge of scripture to test what you feeling is a word from God
Look for revelation in the areas in which God has given you responsibility and accountability over.
Home makers
Business owners
Church leadership
A dad, husband, wife, grandmother
God will mainly speak to you and give guidance in the area’s that you are responsible for and that are under your authority.
Time is a confirming factor, as “wisdom is vindicated by her fruit” Luke 7:35
Luke 7:35 NASB95
35 “Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
Does it Glorify God?
Westminster Catechism says: The Chief End of Man is to Glorify God and to Enjoy Him Forever.
Is what I’m hearing born of the mind? Something that I have learned in the natural. Does its fruit vary?
Is it satan? Does the flow and voice sound obstructive, negative, pushy, fearful, accusative, violates nature of God, violates Word of God? Is there a fear of it being tested or appeals to ego?
Does the fruit of it produce fear, compulsion, bondage, anxiety, confusion, inflated ego.
Is of God? A living flow of thoughts and pictures that come from the innermost being. Was your inner being focused on Jesus.
Was it instructive, upbuilding, comforting, and is willing to be tested?
Does the fruit bring faith, power, peace, sound mind, enlightenment, knowledge, humility.
