Big Idea- Gods names and how He is described in the Bible helps us to understand who He is.
Yahweh-Shalom (יהוה שָׁלוֹם, yhwh shalom): The Lord of Peace; or The Lord our Peace
So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
This name was given by Gideon After he had seen an Angel and interacted with the Angel face to face and thought he would die. But God told him “peace be with you, do not fear, you shall not die”.
Yahweh-Elohim (אֵלִ֑ים, yhwh Elohim): “Lord God”
Last time we had Elohim alone with was Mighty and strong creator. This combines Yahweh and Elohim which means Lord God and emphasizes the Lordship of God who is the only God.
This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
You therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, Awake to punish all the nations; Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah
Yahweh-Tsidkenu (יְהוָֹה צִדְקֵנוּ, yhwh tsidqenu): “The Lord our Righteousness”
This is similar to the word that we had last time (YHWH-M’Kaddesh) and it points to God showing that He is the only one who is and provides righteousness to others.
In those days Judah will be saved, And Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS’
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Yahweh-Rohi (יְהוָ֥ה רֹ֝עִ֗ , yhwh roi): “The Lord Our Shepherd”
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Yahweh-Shammah (יהוה שָׁמָּה , yhwh shammah): “The Lord Is There”
This speaks to Gods Abiding Presence.
All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.
Then He brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary which faces toward the east, but it was shut.
And the Lord said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter by it, because the Lord God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut.
As for the prince, because he is the prince, he may sit in it to eat bread before the Lord; he shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gateway, and go out the same way.”
Also He brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple; so I looked, and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord; and I fell on my face.
Yahweh-Saboath (יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת , yhwh saboath): “The Lord of Hosts”
When it mentions Hosts it is referring to “hordes” both of Angles and Mankind. He is the Lord of Heaven and all that exist. This name is used to show who God is and His power reminding us that He is a God who is sovereign over all and He will do what He says He will do.
Therefore the Lord says, The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, “Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries, And take vengeance on My enemies.
The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
El Elyon (אֵל עֶלְי֔וֹן, el elyon): “Most High”
Here when it is calling God Most High, it is referring to His exaltation and His absolute right to Lordship.
and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”
EL ROI (אֵל רֳאִי, el ro'iy): “God of Seeing”
Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”
This was Hagar’s response when she was sent away from Abraham and Sarah with her son. God saw her and took care of her even when she felt alone.
EL-Olam (אֵֽל׃ עוֹלָ֥ם el olam ): “Everlasting God)
Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
You turn man to destruction, And say, “Return, O children of men.”
Gods nature is unbound he has not beginning or end, time does not restrain him.
EL-Gibhor (אֵ֣ל גִּבּ֔וֹר el gibhor):”Mighty God”
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
