Heart of the Law
Heart of the Law
Last week we spoke about Jesus coming to fulfill the Law and we are called to still live by it’s true intention
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
This was an outlandish claim
How can we live righteous lives greater than these Religious leaders
Remember the Law was to show us we cannot save ourselves and reveals our hearts
We are stepping into what is generally known as the “six antitheses”
Jesus is taking 6 important OT laws and interpreting them in the light of heart attitudes and not just actions
“You have heard it said” statements and adds a but...
Let’s pray and dive in
Angry Heart
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
Law is “Do not murder”
The Heart issue is Anger
22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Is it wrong to be angry? - Righteous anger
26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Anger held onto leads to bitterness and hate
It imprisons us and makes us destroyers instead of builders
It breaks our communion with God
No matter how just your words may be, you ruin everything when you speak with anger.
-John Chrysostom
It must be dealt with
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Four: The King’s Principles: True Righteousness (Matthew 5)
It has well been said that the person who refuses to forgive his brother destroys the very bridge over which he himself must walk.
Lustful Heart
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
Law “Do not commit adultery”
The Heart issue is Lust
28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
A glance identifying beauty is not lust
A stare and a longing starts the road
No one wakes up and says “I am going to cheat on Husband/wife today”
It is a series of compromises
We slide into sin
Sexual sin is devastating
Paul warns
18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
I would contend the war in our culture is base in sexual sin
Abortion - sex without consequence or commitment
Homosexuality, Identity and Transgender
Marriage
Serious problems needing serious commitments
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Jesus not hack body parts off -is do whatever it takes to correct the heart attitude

Heart of the Law
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Rest in this-it is His business to lead, command, impel, send, call, or whatever you want to call it. It is your business to obey, follow, move, respond, or what have you... The sound of "gentle stillness" after all the thunder and wind have passed will be the ultimate Word from God. -Jim Elliot
Next week we will dive into 2 more
Read Matt 5: 31-37
