I’ve been preaching a series on Psalm 107.
The overarching point seeks to answer the question, “what moves a person?”
It’s four words that can be looked at in many different ways.
But in the most general sense—once we’re saved,
What moves us forward in life?
What drives our sanctification?
What keeps us faithful, and protects us from falling away?
Is it
the spiritual disciplines of prayer and Bible reading?
fellowship with other believers?
any of the other aspects of the Christian life?
None of those are wrong. They’re all true, actually.
But what is the thing that will move us towards embracing those things, and growing in them? In desiring them in the first place?
What moves us in this earthly life? The love of God.
As a guy who loves doctrine, I’ve come to realize that the only thing that will be on my mind when my life is over is the reality that Jesus Christ has truly and forever put away my sin through his death.
When you stand before God to give an account for the life he gave you, the thing that you will be most thankful for is the love that he has for you.
In this life, there are a million things trying to blur God.
There’s a million things wanting to dull our sensitivity to God, and steal our affections away from him.
Because the forces of evil understand that this is how they bring God’s people down.
They steal our love. They corrupt our desires. They deaden our affections.
So what’s the antidote to these things?
Remembering the love of God.
