Hey everyone, I think most of you know who I am, but I am Jonathan Vest, and work with Mr. Brashier at the church with the youth group. Today I’m going to be talking about psalm 34. If you have your Bible, you can turn there and we can read it together.
In most of your bibles there will be a note that shows background. David, the author of the psalm, was anointed to be the future king yet Saul who was the current king was threatened by david and tryed to killed david. So what did he do? well he fled to a city called gaff. But the king there was also thretened by david so david had to run away, and in this time, he wrote this psalm. You can look at 1 Samuel 21:10-15
Psalm 34:1–4 ESV
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together! I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 34:5–8 ESV
Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Psalm 34:9–12 ESV
Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good?
Psalm 34:13–16 ESV
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
Psalm 34:17–19 ESV
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
Psalm 34:20–22 ESV
He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
Let us pray
About two or two and a half years ago I started hearing about the guy. Graham and Mitchell Delmotte, and Brady Witt would tell me about this guy named Mr. Brashier, I don’t know if any of you have ever heard about him. But I would hear these great things about this Mr. Brashier over time it was like I knew him because I had heard all these things about him. But then I think it was a little over a year ago and I was preaching in the youth group and at one point i looked over and I saw Mr. Brashier and I was like oh thats Mr. Brashier. and then like a month later at fall retreat I think we talked a little and especaly over the last couple of months we talked a lot and ive gotten to know him and he is a lot different than who i imagined he was based on what other poeple told me about him
I think the same thing happens with christianity and God. we hear a lot about him and we might know a lot about him but unit we get a taste of true worship we dont really know Him. until we have a relationship with him we don’t know him.
I want to go through this Psalm and explore what David is writing about.
Psalm 34:1 ESV
I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
In this is a declaration for the future. He is saying he will bless the lord and he shall continually praise God. That is a Future expectation. This means that David is saying in the future he will always bless and praise the lord. While these words are stated in this verse, David is esentaly saying, lord, no matter what happens in my life i will always worship you.
Psalm 34:2–3 ESV
My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!
The word humble isnt talking people who talk bad about themsleve. its not talkibg about poeple who contiuly talk themselves down to others. Humility is one who has a right understanding of who they are, in this context it is someone who understands there are sinfull fallen individul and that God us a perfect holy God.
after he wrote this he gives an invitation, esentaly he is saying i have a reason to praise Him, join me!
Psalm 34:4–5 ESV
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.
in verses 4 and 5 he presents more reason why he worships God. Its cause God delived him. most likley deliverded him from the two kings that are chseing him
Psalm 34:6–7 ESV
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Psalm 34:8–10 ESV
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
This is probably the most popular verse in this chapter, verse 8. David says taste and see that the lord is good. When we talk about music we think about hearing howver someitmes we talk about taste. Have you heard the phrase “a sour note” or a “sweet melody.” Well throught the bible God used taste to remind his poeple about things. For example in the passover meal, the isrealits eat bitter herbs, God instructed them to do so in remembrance of the beterness they experienced in slavery. or during the lords super we eat bread, this is in remberence of Jesus. he was the bread of life. Here David is using the laungege of taste as an expericnce. we dont know the lords is good until we expirence him.
Psalm 34:11–14 ESV
Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
here he talks about fearing the lord. The fear of the lord is the begining of all wisdom. the fear of the lord is siliar to what we talked about earlier with humility. It is the recognition the God is your creator and the he is infiently greater and more powerful than you are. out of this fear as david says we ought to not do evil but do good and seek after peace.
Psalm 34:15–18 ESV
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
this should confurt us. If you are a christian today. God loves you, he listens to you when you pray to him and will deliver you.
Psalm 34:19–22 ESV
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
Remember this, if you love Christ and have a relationship with Christ, you are His chosen people, you won't face the anger and punishment of God, He redeems you. This means that no matter what trial you go through God is right there by your side
