Has anyone ever broken their promise to you?
Have you ever been really excited about something?
Maybe your birthday?
Maybe Christmas?
Maybe your parents promised you ice cream for dessert!
Only to finish your dinner, clear your whole plate for you mom to say it’s bed time and no ice cream tonight.
As a father, this happens to me. I tell my kids we can have dessert and then because something did’t go the way I thought it would we couldn’t get dessert.
It’s not that parents lie, but we make mistakes.
The good new is, God doesn’t make mistakes.
God isn’t surprised when dinner doesn’t take long.
There are so many great things about God!
He’s strong.
He’s smart.
He’s kind.
He’s loving.
What’s your favorite thing about God? Just shout it out?
My favorite thing about God is that he is faithful.
That means we can trust Him.
Unlike people, God can always be trusted to keep his promises.
Here’s what the Bible says
19 God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
One of the things God wants us to know about Him is that he will never lie to you.
When God makes a promise, you can trust Him to do it.
One of the reasons you can trust God is that He does not change His mind.
Do you ever change your mind?
We all do.
But God doesn’t!
When God makes a promise, we know he will keep it.
Jesus tells us a parable that includes a great promise.
Matthew 18:12–14 “12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.”
This is the best promise Jesus has ever made.
What’s so great about this promise? You’re the lost sheep.
Every time you sin, you’re like a sheep that wonders away.
And when you sin, Jesus’ promise is that He will find you and bring you back.
Did you know there are two kinds of promises?
There are promises that require you to do something
Eat you dinner, you get dessert
clean your room and you can play video games
There are also promises that don’t require you to do anything
You’ll get dinner tonight just because your mom and dad love you
They promise you dinner just because they love you
Jesus’ promise to find you is the same
If you are His sheep, when you get lost He will find you because you are his
He doesn’t love you because you did something he asked you, he loves you because you are His.
And when you wonder away and get lost, He promises to look for you until He finds you
