John has just asked his audience to walk in the truth and light. This contrasts with the deception of the antichrists.

God’s Children have Expectancy (vv. 28-29)

John wants his readers to know the evidences of salvation.
Abiding results in joyful anticipation of His return.
Jesus’ return is certain, “…when he shall appear”
Jesus’ return will be sudden.
Jesus will judge righteously.
The result of being born again is righteousness.
They know that Jesus the Son is righteous; therefore they know that those who behave righteously possess the righteous nature of their Father through spiritual birth
Righteousness is conformity to God’s standard. It is being in right relationship with God and doing His will.

God’s Children have a new Identity (3:1-2)

God’s love produces awe in the heart of the believer.
Awe at the greatness of God’s love.
Wonder over the sacrificial nature of God’s love.
Amazement in the receiving God’s love.
God’s love must be received (John 1:12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,”
The Manner of God’s love:
It is unmerited.
It is complete. – no shadow of turning.
It is perfect. – casts out fear.
God’s love has brought us into His family!
We are now accepted (Eph. 1:6).
We are no longer afraid, but adopted. (Romans 8:15)
God’s love is transforming us.
The now – we are the children of God.
The not yet – we have not yet been glorified.
The assurance – we will be like him.

God’s Children grow in Purity (v. 3)

The Love of God produces a great hope; we will be changed into His image.
Our hope is displayed in our action, we seek to please our Lord Jesus Christ.
We determine to seek purity, because we love Him.
Just as a bride prepares herself for her wedding.
On my wedding day I prepared beforehand. I got to the church early. I got the car detailed. I brought my shaver. I booked into the hotel early. She spent the day preparing.
Application:
1. Grow in your fellowship with God.
2. Rest in God’s love for you.
3. Ask God to show you how to please Him more.
