A study on Zechariah
The Messiah Will Reign
Zech. 6:9-15
Theme: God shows us His plan for a great future for believers.
Message 7
Introduction: In this series we have studied primarily 8 visions so far. God assures His people that He would cleanse and protect them. He addressed a better future as found in the day of the Lord mentioned also here. The climax of that day when Jesus returns will be when He is crowned as King-Priest to reign over His righteous kingdom.
God is using the prophet to reveal a much deeper meaning to God’s plan through this temple. God gives three parts to this message.
I. The confrontation vv. 9-11
A. The command of God vv. 9-10
1. Three Jews arrived from Babylon bringing gold and silver offerings for the building of the temple.
2. They would stay at the home of Josiah, who had a nickname (Hen which means gracious one).
3. The three men were obviously trusted men as they brought gold and silver to help pay for the rebuilding of the temple.
B. The plan of God v. 11
1. The lesson was a symbolic act illustrating that the Messiah would appear as a king-priest and rebuild God’s temple in the days of Israel’s future restoration which is the millennium.
2. God told Zechariah to make an ornate crown out of some of the gold and silver that these three men brought from Babylon.
3. The text has crowns not crown. The plural could indicate a composite crown, a superlative crown, and/or a sacred crown.
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.” (Revelation 19:12)
II. The coronation vv. 12-13
A. The message v. 12
1. Zerubbabel, not Joshua, was God’s choice to build the restoration temple, but Messiah, whom Joshua prefigured, would build the future temple for the Lord.
2. Joshua a type and Jesus is the antitype with the same name meaning the “Lord saves.”
3. The crown put upon the head of Joshua symbolizes the coronation of the Messiah when He comes back.
4. The branch refers to Jesus who is the Old Testament anointed one whose root goes back to David.
5. God chose Joshua and for the first time in Jewish history, the Lord united the monarchy and the priesthood.
B. The magnification v. 13
1. The only One who could be King and Priest is Jesus Christ.
2. All of this refers to Christ whose name is the branch and looking towards the future Kingdom, Jesus will be both King and Priest.
3. He will sit on the throne and reign and also build the temple.
4. No priest in Jewish history ever served as king and the one tried to become a priest, Uzziah, was severely judged.
5. Only in Jesus does Jehovah unite the throne and the altar in direct fulfillment of
The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4)
III. The commemoration vv. 14-15
A. A crown of royalty v. 14
1. The ceremonial crown that Zechariah made for Joshua was to remain in the restoration temple as a reminder to Helem, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, and Josiah of Zephaniah.
2. It would also remind the Israelites the Messiah will come and establish His temple and Kingdom.
3. When the Branch appears, Gentiles from far away will come and help build in the temple of the Lord.
4. The men who donated might represent the future Gentiles who were from afar in the last days coming to the temple.
5. When all the world comes at the time of restoration, the people will know that Yahweh has sent the Messiah to His people.
B. A voice of authority v. 15
1. When Jesus reigns, the people will obey ultimately and worship Him.
2. He is the Lord and His voice will declare authority over all the earth.
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9–11)
Conclusion: There is coming a better day, a more glorious day when Jesus comes as the King.
