Confronting the Spirit of Jezebel: Breaking the Chains of Control in Relationships

Primary Scripture Reading:
Revelation 2:20–23 KJV 1900
20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
Introduction:
Today, we are going to expose a cunning and destructive spirit that has infiltrated many aspects of our lives — the spirit of Jezebel. This spirit is not limited to a person but manifests as an influence, aiming to control, manipulate, and ultimately destroy relationships, both in the church and in our personal lives.
The spirit of Jezebel, named after Queen Jezebel of the Old Testament, is characterized by manipulation, control, and rebellion against God’s authority. It seeks to undermine true spiritual leadership and create division. It is a spirit that preys on weaknesses, insecurities, and the lusts of the flesh, corrupting what God intended to be pure and holy.
I. The Origin of the Jezebel Spirit: A Biblical Context
To understand the spirit of Jezebel, we need to look at the historical Jezebel in the Bible. In 1 Kings 16:31-33, we read that Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, King of the Sidonians, and she married Ahab, the King of Israel. Jezebel introduced the worship of Baal into Israel, leading the people away from the true worship of Yahweh.
Jezebel’s name itself has a powerful meaning: Iyzebel in Hebrew, which can mean “unhusbanded,” symbolizing rebellion against authority. She was a woman who refused to submit to the authority of her husband or God, which made her a prototype for the spirit of rebellion and manipulation we encounter today.
The Spirit of Jezebel: Traits and Manifestations
The Spirit of Jezebel can manifest in women as well as men!
The spirit of Jezebel is not limited to a single historical figure; rather, it is an evil influence that seeks to manipulate, control, deceive, and lead others into rebellion against God’s authority. This spirit can manifest in the lives of individuals, in relationships, and even in the church. To better understand how the spirit of Jezebel operates today, let’s break down its traits and characteristics using both Old and New Testament references.
II. Old Testament Characteristics of Jezebel
1. Idolatry and False Worship (1 Kings 16:31-33)
Jezebel was a staunch worshiper of Baal, a false god of the Phoenicians. She led Israel into idol worship, turning their hearts away from Yahweh.
Manifestation Today: This spirit leads people into spiritual compromise, prioritizing worldly desires, power, and materialism over the worship of the one true God. It can show up as a fixation on success, fame, or any idol that takes the place of God in someone’s heart.
2. Manipulation and Control (1 Kings 21:7-10)
Jezebel manipulated her husband, King Ahab, into securing Naboth’s vineyard by deceit and false accusations. She used her influence to control others for her own gain.
Manifestation Today: This spirit shows up as someone who uses manipulation and deceit to get what they want, often through guilt, fear, or flattery. In relationships, this could be a spouse who controls their partner through emotional manipulation. In the workplace, it could be a leader who uses deceit to maintain power.
3. Hatred of True Prophets and Godly Authority (1 Kings 18:4)
Jezebel hated the true prophets of God, seeking to kill them while promoting false prophets who would align with her agenda.
Manifestation Today: This spirit often resists godly leadership and despises correction. It tries to silence voices that speak the truth of God’s Word, creating division within churches and attacking those who stand for righteousness.
4. Sexual Immorality and Seduction (2 Kings 9:22)
Jezebel was associated with witchcraft and harlotry, as she used seduction as a weapon to influence and control.
Manifestation Today: The spirit of Jezebel manifests through sexual immorality, pornography, and a culture of seduction. It preys on lust and perversion, leading individuals away from holiness and purity. This is often seen in the entertainment industry, social media, and even within relationships where manipulation is tied to physical or sexual temptation.
5. Intimidation and Fear (1 Kings 19:1-3)
After Elijah defeated the prophets of Baal, Jezebel sent a threatening message that caused him to flee in fear for his life. She used intimidation to paralyze the prophet of God.
Manifestation Today: The Jezebel spirit thrives on creating fear, anxiety, and intimidation, especially in those who are trying to serve God faithfully. It can manifest in individuals who use threats, passive-aggressive behavior, or domineering attitudes to control others.
III. New Testament Characteristics of Jezebel
In the New Testament, we see a spiritual parallel to Jezebel in the church of Thyatira.
1. False Teaching and Deception (Revelation 2:20)
Jesus rebukes the church in Thyatira for tolerating “that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess,” teaching and seducing God’s servants to commit fornication and eat food sacrificed to idols.
Manifestation Today: This spirit leads people into doctrinal error and false teachings, often presenting a message that appeals to the flesh rather than the spirit. It promotes a form of godliness but denies its power (2 Timothy 3:5). We see this in the rise of prosperity gospel teachings that emphasize material blessings over spiritual growth or in teachings that downplay sin and repentance.
2. Rebellion Against God’s Authority (Revelation 2:21)
The spirit of Jezebel refuses to repent and rejects God’s call for change. It stands in open rebellion against His authority.
Manifestation Today: This can be seen in an attitude of pride and unrepentance. Individuals influenced by this spirit often reject correction, refuse to submit to spiritual authority, and maintain a posture of rebellion against biblical truth.
3. Spiritual Seduction and Corruption (Revelation 2:22-23)
Jezebel’s influence leads to spiritual adultery — a departure from a true and pure relationship with Jesus Christ.
Manifestation Today: The spirit of Jezebel is evident in the seduction of believers away from their devotion to Christ. This can be through distractions, worldly enticements, and a focus on self-gratification rather than self-denial. It lures believers into compromising their faith and engaging in worldly behaviors that dishonor God.
IV. Dealing with the Spirit of Jezebel: A Biblical Approach
When facing a situation where your partner or a person in your life exhibits traits of the spirit of Jezebel — control, manipulation, rebellion, and a divisive influence — it can be spiritually, emotionally, and relationally challenging. This is not just a personality conflict; it is a spiritual battle that requires discernment, prayer, and wisdom. Here’s a biblical guide to help navigate this difficult situation while maintaining a Christ-centered approach.
1. Pray for Discernment and Spiritual Insight
Before taking any action, it is crucial to pray and seek God’s wisdom.
James 1:5 (KJV): “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
Why This Matters: Dealing with a spirit of Jezebel requires spiritual discernment. You must be able to separate the person from the spirit operating behind their actions. Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity, guidance, and the strength to see beyond the surface behavior.
2. Maintain a Spirit of Love and Humility
Even though the behavior may be hurtful or manipulative, remember that your partner is not your enemy. The true enemy is the spirit influencing them.
Ephesians 6:12 (KJV): “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Practical Step: Approach the situation with a heart of compassion and humility. It is easy to react with frustration or anger, but doing so may only escalate the conflict. Instead, demonstrate the love of Christ while standing firm in the truth.
3. Establish Clear Boundaries with Firmness and Love
The spirit of Jezebel often seeks to dominate and control. It is vital to establish healthy, biblical boundaries in your relationship.
Matthew 5:37 (KJV): “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
How to Apply: Be direct but gentle when setting boundaries. Clearly communicate what behaviors are unacceptable, such as manipulation, verbal abuse, or attempts to control. Do not allow fear or intimidation to prevent you from standing firm. Ensure your boundaries are rooted in Scripture and aligned with God’s will.
4. Confront with Truth, but in Love
The spirit of Jezebel thrives in secrecy and deception. When led by the Holy Spirit, it may be necessary to lovingly confront your partner about their behavior.
Ephesians 4:15 (KJV): “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.”
Approach: Pray beforehand for God’s wisdom and the right timing. When you confront, focus on the behavior rather than labeling your partner with the Jezebel spirit. Say something like, “I feel that when you do [specific behavior], it feels controlling/manipulative, and it’s hurting our relationship.” Use “I” statements to express your feelings rather than accusations, which may cause them to become defensive.
5. Engage in Spiritual Warfare: Bind the Spirit, Not the Person
The spirit of Jezebel must be confronted through spiritual warfare. This involves praying against the spirit without attacking your partner personally.
Matthew 18:18 (KJV): “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Spiritual Action: In your prayer time, bind the influence of the Jezebel spirit over your partner’s life. Pray something like, “In the name of Jesus, I bind the spirit of Jezebel and command it to leave. I break its hold over my partner and our relationship.” Speak life, peace, and the fruit of the Spirit over your partner.
6. Lead by Example: Walk in the Fruit of the Spirit
The best way to combat the spirit of Jezebel is to walk in the opposite spirit — the Spirit of Christ. Demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit in your actions, words, and responses.
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV): “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
Example: If your partner is trying to control, respond with patience and self-control. If they are manipulating through fear, respond with faith and trust in God. Your Christ-like behavior can serve as a powerful witness and may even lead to conviction and repentance.
7. Be Prepared for Resistance: Stand Firm in Your Faith
The spirit of Jezebel does not easily give up control. Be prepared for pushback, resistance, and even attempts to manipulate or intimidate you when you confront this spirit.
1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV): “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith.”
Encouragement: Stay strong in your faith, knowing that God is your protector and defender. Do not allow fear to control your actions. Trust that the Holy Spirit is with you, empowering you to stand firm.
8. Intercede for Their Deliverance and Healing
Ultimately, your partner needs deliverance and healing from the influence of this spirit. Commit to praying for their freedom and restoration.
2 Timothy 2:25-26 (KJV): “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
Prayer: Pray for God to soften their heart, bring conviction, and lead them to repentance. Ask the Lord to open their eyes to the truth and to heal any wounds or traumas that may have opened the door for this spirit.
9. Trust God for the Outcome
The battle ultimately belongs to the Lord. Your responsibility is to obey God’s Word, pray fervently, and trust Him with the outcome.
Romans 12:19 (KJV): “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
Final Thought: Release any desire for control or vengeance into God’s hands. Trust that He will bring justice, healing, and restoration in His time and in His way.
Conclusion
Dealing with a partner manifesting the spirit of Jezebel is a spiritual challenge, but with prayer, discernment, and godly wisdom, you can navigate this difficult situation. Remember to stand firm in your faith, show Christ-like love, and continue to seek God’s guidance. The Lord is your strength, and He will give you the grace to endure and overcome.
