Luke 17:11–19 NIV
11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
Luke 17:11–12 NIV

Leprosy / stood at a distance
Leprosy in Jesus' Time:
Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, was a chronic condition that caused severe skin sores and nerve damage.
Those afflicted were considered unclean and were socially and religiously ostracized. They had to live in isolation and announce their condition to keep others away.
Verses 11-13: The Lepers' Plea
· The ten lepers stood at a distance and called out to Jesus, "Master, have pity on us!"
· This plea shows their recognition of Jesus' authority and their desperate need for healing.
Luke 17:13 NIV
13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
Loud voice
There are times in our lives where you can’t be cute but we need to cry out to God in a Loud voice.
Being loud Pastor is Indignified. - You are at the end of yourself you don’t care what anyone thinks.
Master: The word translated “master” is the same one Peter used (Luke 5:5) and means “chief commander.” They knew that Jesus was totally in command of even disease and death, and they trusted Him to help them.
Did you notice they did not cry out to: Mohamad, confusius, not budda.
Luke 17:14 NIV
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
Go show the priest
The old testament levitical law required them to be examined by a priest to be declared clean or unclean (Leviticus 13-14).
As they went - they were cleansed
Verse 14: The Healing Command
· Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests. As they went, they were cleansed.
· This act of obedience and faith led to their healing, showing the importance of following Jesus' instructions.
Luke 17:15 NIV
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.
Loud voice
Before returning home to see his wife, children, family, he first returned to Jesus.
Verses 15-16: The One Who Returned
· One of the healed lepers, a Samaritan, returned to thank Jesus, praising God in a loud voice and throwing himself at Jesus' feet.
· His gratitude highlights the significance of recognizing and thanking God for His blessings.
Luke 17:16 NIV
16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.
Luke 17:17 NIV
17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?
Jesus; is there something wrong with my math?
Verses 17-18: Jesus' Response
· Jesus expressed surprise that only one returned to give thanks, despite all ten being healed.
· This underscores the importance of gratitude and the rarity of true thankfulness.
Before we judge the other 9 too harshly, what is our own “GQ”—“Gratitude Quotient”? How often do we take our blessings for granted and fail to thank the Lord?
Luke 17:18 NIV
18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?”
Too often we are content to enjoy the gift but we forget the Giver.
Some ppl seek God to heal their marriage, their finances, their health, but then get a case of amnesia.
Luke 17:19 NIV
19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
Verse 19: The Deeper Healing
· Jesus told the man, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."
· This statement suggests a deeper, spiritual healing and salvation beyond the physical cure.
By coming to Jesus, the man received something greater than physical healing: he was also saved from his sins. Jesus said, “Your faith has saved you” (literal translation), the same words He spoke to the repentant woman who anointed His feet (Luke 7:50).
The Samaritan’s nine friends were declared clean by the priest, but he was declared saved by the Son of God! While it is wonderful to experience the miracle of physical healing, it is even more wonderful to experience the miracle of eternal salvation.
Have you open your heart to Jesus yet? As Master and Saviour?
Psalm 103:1–4 NIV
1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
Be the one that returns to God and show gratitude and how grateful you are for your blessings.
Song: 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)
Extra Notes:
The Jews and Samaritans would not normally live together, but misery loves company and all ten were outcasts
Jesus then did a second thing for him—He forgave his sins. The other nine lepers were healed but were not saved. Thankfulness should be in the Christian’s heart. Why do you go to church on Sunday? Do you go there to worship God and thank Him for all He has done for you? Part of your worship is to thank Him. About the only thing we can give to God is our thanksgiving. How wonderful it is just to thank Him. We are even to make our requests to God with thanksgiving. We ought to have a thankful heart toward Him.
