Current Bible Series: Unqualified: Still Loved
a walk through Joel and Amos to rend our hearts and turn or run to God.
LESSON: INTRO
The Bible presents story after story that centers around people’s interactions with God and their response to God’s call on their lives.
Studying a person from the Bible can be an extremely meaningful way to gain insight about God and his relationship with humanity.
So, what can we take away from the Study of Amos?
1. God Calls and Commissions Ordinary Individuals[i]
Amos’ vocation as a shepherd and farmer would have marked him as one suited to carry the mantel of prophet.
It’s not the last time that God called on Shepherds or Farmers.
2. The Burden of a Divine Calling Cannot Be Easily Ignored
In receiving the call to prophesy to the northern kingdom, Amos could have chosen to stay home to tend his fig trees and care for his sheep.
Instead, he strapped on his sandals, picked up his staff, and ventured north, trusting that God would provide for his needs and give him the words to say when it mattered most.
WHO ARE YOU?
God has called you.
Isaiah 43:1 NLT
1 But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.
His Spirit rests upon you.
We are un-qualified, but you are loved.
BUT IT’S MORE THAN JUST A CALLING… WE MUST ALSO LOOK AT OUR LIVES AND MOVE BEYOND OUR SIN—
Be convicted by the Holy Spirit
Expose religious hypocrisy
Bring real Worship to God that is authentic
Often we live and move and have our being in Us!
Acts 17:28 (NLT)
28 For in HIM we live and move and exist.
Because of this our hearts condemn us.
We need repentance and forgiveness…Only then do we bring worship that is truly pleasing to God.
Amos 5:23 (NLT)
23 Away with your noisy hymns of praise! I will not listen to the music of your harps.
The Rub was that Israel’s worship didn’t match their relationship with God and their Lifestyle.
Amos 5:24 (NLT)
24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.
The direction God had for them has always been about building a relationship with Him.
HEBREW meanings help us grab this scripture...
Righteous means— the standard of right equitable relationships between people no matter their social differences.
Justice means— concrete actions you take to correct injustice to create righteousness.
Amos 5:4 (NLT)
4 Now this is what the Lord says to the family of Israel: “Come back to me and live!
Amos 5:14 (NLT)
14 Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live!
Then the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed.
Doing good is not an end in its self.
Only through Jesus’ Blood can we enter into a relationship that corrects our life and bring Life and Joy ever more.
YES YOU ARE CALLED, BUT WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Will you answer the call?
Will you let the Holy Spirit convict you of sin?
Will you repent and seek to be led by the Holy Spirit?
There is a Day of Hope for you…
Isaiah 35:1–4 NLT
Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days. The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses. Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers and singing and joy! The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon. There the Lord will display his glory, the splendor of our God. With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands, and encourage those who have weak knees. Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.”
TODAY IS THE DAY OF SALVATION!
2 Corinthians 6:2 NLT
2 For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.
THE DAY GOD HAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME!
Let’s Pray...
