16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The basic meaning of this verb has to do with having pity or helping a person in difficult circumstances. It can be used to describe displays of mercy and compassion by God and humans

14 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Jesus wants to heal us too.
