Church Adoption Merger Plan Overview
General Time frame:
“Should We” Time Period 2-4 months
“How” Time Period 2-4 months
“When” Transition during summer of 2025 with merger launching in fall of 2025
1. Readiness for Adoption
Readiness 360 and Financial Feasibility Study to assess church and financial preparedness. 40 Days of Prayer to seek guidance and alignment. Leaders and members must evaluate expectations, remaining realistic about limitations and costs. Building Trust and Clear Communication are critical to prepare both churches.
2. Gospel Renewal and Mission Alignment
The ultimate purpose of merging is Gospel Renewal—renewing people and communities. Adoption must be driven by a shared missional focus and a vision for the kingdom. Evaluate Mission, Vision, and Values alignment. What are our core beliefs and values? How can we enhance disciple-making together? "Better Together" mindset—seeing this as a partnership for renewal and kingdom expansion.
3. Church Culture Compatibility
Assess the compatibility of both churches’ cultures, traditions, and theological positions through intentional conversations and mutual church visits. Define non-negotiable aspects of culture to clarify expectations and prevent friction. Consider practical issues, like doctrine and worship style. What “sacred cows” exist in each church that might be difficult to let go of? Plan "Get to Know Each Other" events and serving events to build relationships and familiarity.
4. Transparency and Communication with Leadership and Congregation
Transparency and Honesty are essential; every detail should be openly shared. Inundate with information—ensure all stakeholders understand the vision and logistics. Leaders must buy into the mission, be clear on expectations, and commit to guiding both congregations through the transition.
5. Considering the Costs and Gains
Recognize potential monetary costs and prepare for unexpected financial needs. Evaluate the gains and losses: what will each church gain from the partnership, and what will be sacrificed? Understand that adoption merger might mean relinquishing past identity for a second life, including church name, facilities, staff, and programs.
6. Embracing Change
Successful mergers happen when the joining church is ready to embrace new leadership, ministries, worship styles, and mission. Change is the one of the main mantras of mergers. Helping people grieve.
7. Moving Forward
Develop a transition timeline for Pastor Dan's resignation and Pastor Pete's move to the senior pastor role, coordinating closely with Classis for approval and input. Have a season of going dark. Create an FAQ sheet for congregation members. Hold townhall meetings. Ensure all legal matters are thoroughly addressed.
· Establish an implementation leadership launch team.
