Intro and tension

Painter - Paint over cracks - no - not issue - Moving foundation.
Too often - Paint over Cracks - Without looking at foundation.
Last week - Not “Marriage people issues” just “people issues” -
Many of marriages built on worldly expectations.
Marriage has moved from God’s design of Service - To Man’s design of gratificaiton.
Let’s get back to foundation.
Series: Selfless Love-r.
Last week recap.
Is Marriage your greatest purpose?
Singliness = Gift
Marriage = Gift.
Callled first to 3 things:
Christ
Church
Mission
Marriage should only ever support these 3 callings, but it is not necessary for these three callings.
Be clear;
Marriage doesn’t hold you back - Nor superior.
Serving God while Married is choosing to Serve God where you are.
On the table - Healing and hope
Don’t know story - Pray for hurting.
*Prayer*
Title: Why would you?
Unpack question; Why enter into a biblical marriage?
Last week; You can serve the Kingdom of God better together, than you can apart.
What does that look like?
Ephesians 5:32 ESV
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
Refers = Picture - It’s a picture of the Gospel.
How?
3 Ways
1st Way
It reflects Christ and the Church
Ephesians 5:21 ESV
submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Submission = Brrrr
Mufassa = brrrr
Eph 5 - How to act all believers - Not void because of Marriage - Supported because of Marriage.
If submission is for both male and female - What is it? How does it reflect gospel?
Ephesians 5:22–24 ESV
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Submit - brrr - Not gender roles sermon - However will make this point.
Role is not attached to value.
Eve made from Adam, to perfectly compliment Adam.
Eve is like Adam and yet perfectly unlike Adam so as to be the exact suitable counterpart for Adam.
In garden - Who took apple? Eve.
Who did God come after? Adam. Eve didn’t get off hook - Everyone will be held accountable.
Point - There are different roles and ways in which we submit to each other - and it’s to reflect Christ and the Church.
The Church submits to Christ in Authority What does Christ do for the Church?
Ephesians 5:25–29 ESV
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,
What are men submitting to? Promise to love our wives as Christ loves Church.
So how do we love and lead like Christ?
Matthew 20:25–28 ESV
But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Son of Man = So interesting.
Son of Man = in Daniel prophesy of end times - Come host of angels, destroy enemies, everyone serve him.
Jesus saying - Didn’t come right now to be served. Heal broken, help hurting and die for people that hated him.
Men - We are to lead our wives in same way.
How? Focusing on the one that died for us - Becoming conduit.
Quick Exercise - Serving lists - 2- If hers are bigger - We failing.
We serve Jesus - In response to the infinite ways He has served us.
Women - Would you have issue submitting to someone like that?
All my single ladies;
If you want a Gospel Reflecting Marriage in the future - Start living a Gospel Reflecting life now.
1st Reflects Christ and the church.
2nd - It reflects Unity for the Gospel.
Pastor Church Story - Chopping Carrots - Let’s do it.
Fascinating, Emma didn’t say; You should do it. We, why?
We are in unity for the Gospel.
Genesis 2:18 ESV
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Be alone? Man lonley with God? No?
Because there was so much to do FOR God.
Who else can we find in the bible in Unity for the Gospel?
The trinity - Mission? To bring you home.
Garden of Gethsemene.
Matthew 26:38 ESV
Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.”
Jesus, asks the Father to take it away
Matthew 26:42 ESV
Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
They are in Union - Perfect Unity - and on a Mission - To bring you home.
Jesus on the Cross- point of death - into your hands, I commit my spirit. Trust.
Question; what is your Mission? What is worth overlooking offences? Staying together for?
Why can wh overlook or forgive quickly offences i gives her? Because mission to bring people home is bigger than holding it.
2nd - It reflects unity for the Gospel
3rd - it reflects the effect of the Gospel …in a repetitve way
People getting baptised today - Can’t not mention it.
Romans 6:4 ESV
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Buried into Death - What is dying? Our old selves. old dreams. Old Priorities.
me and Emma - Married before Christ - Renewed Vows after Marraige - Why?
had to KILL Those first vows, it was all about us. Now - all about God.
Philippians 2:3–4 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Listen - Marriage in Christ is suppose to be difficult to get out of - Why? It forces forgiveness and repentance.
Marriage is perfect picture of Forgiveness, Repentance in a Repeating way why?
It is suppose to Reflect the way Christ forgives us.
It reflects the effects of the Gospel in a repetitive way.
Ephesians 5:32 ESV

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 ESV
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
