1. The Setting

Jonathan
Judges 3:31 “31 After him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.”
Leviticus 26:8 “8 five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword.”
Ichabod
1 Samuel 4:19-21.
Why?… because it reflects Saul’s spiritual condition
The Glory has departed from him
1 Samuel 13:14 “14 “But now your kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.””

2. The Planning

It wasn’t “I can win a great victory with God’s help.” It was “God can win a great victory through me.”

3. The Crossing

v15
1 Samuel 7:10 “Now Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, and the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day against the Philistines and confused them, so that they were routed before Israel.”

4. The Searching

5. The Conquering

Deuteronomy 20:1–4 “1 “When you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you. 2 “When you are approaching the battle, the priest shall come near and speak to the people. 3 “He shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel, you are approaching the battle against your enemies today. Do not be fainthearted. Do not be afraid, or panic, or tremble before them, 4 for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’”
Shows that saul was unfit to filfill the task of leading Israel against their enemines
1 Samuel 8:20 “20 that we also may be like all the nations, that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.””
