Background:
Hallel Psalms
Good things come in small packages?
You can memorize an entire chapter of the bible!
Pick a hymn…any hymn - write the name down and then we will find it and sing it!
With a few short words the psalmist prophecies and proclaims the great work and wonder of God, namely, the gospel and the Kingdom of Christ, which was foretold but not yet revealed at that time, and he says: “Praise the lord, all heathen!” - Luther
This Psalm, which is very little in its letter, is exceedingly large in its spirit; 4, bursting beyond all bounds of race or nationality, it calls upon all mankind to praise the name of the Lord. - Spurgeon
The shortest of the psalms is one of the grandest. It's invitation to all nations to join in praising Jehovah for his goodness to Israel is virtually a recognition that the ultimate object of Israel's calling was the salvation of the world. It is in the truest sense a messianic Psalm. Alexander Kirkpatrick
This is a Psalm in which all the Gentiles are summoned to praise God (toward us)!!!
Psalm 117 ESV
1 Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! 2 For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!
Hymn: Praise Him, Praise Him

The Whole World Is Summoned to Praise (1).

Psalm 117:1 ESV
1 Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples!
After being brought back from exile.
Ezra 3:10 (ESV) - 10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the directions of David king of Israel.
There are things to sing about!
How can I keep from singing your praise? How can I ever say enough? How amazing is your love? How can I keep from shouting your name? I know I am loved by the King and it makes my heart want to sing!
VICTORIOUS SINGING!!! - CHOIR (Baton! - such power in the proclamation).
Returned exiles mocked - fox on the wall…
Neh. 12:31 and 38.
Nehemiah 12:43 (ESV) - 43 And they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy; the women and children also rejoiced. And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.
NATIONS - (GENTILES - blessing secured by Christ)
Galatians 3:13–14 (ESV) - 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
ALL - without distinction and without limit.
Revelation 5:9–10 (ESV) - 9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

Hymn # Joy to the World

The Reason the World is Praising (2).

Psalm 117:2 ESV
2 For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!
The word “Great” means strong, mighty able to prevail.
The root of that word is “Warrior.”
His steadfast love is fighting for us!
His faithfulness is fighting for us and both of them “ENDURES FOREVER.”
Something that endures forever is (I don’t even know how to finish that sentence.) - endures forever???
Steadfast love - toward us! (OVER US) - protection from all outside threats!
ps. 115 - all that he pleases. he finds pleasure in fighting for us and protecting us!
