Homily for the Memorial of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin
"I am nothing without God. I can do nothing without Him." This line, taken from the 1952 film Cabrini, beautifully captures the heart of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini’s life. She, the first U.S. citizen to be canonized, understood deeply that everything in life, especially the mission of the Church, begins with the awareness of Jesus' words, "Without Me, you can do nothing"(John 15:5).
For St. Frances Cabrini, her entire life was a mission of gratitude to God.She once said, "My God, you have created me for yourself, and I must serve you with all my being." She recognized that all she had and all she did were gifts from God. Her life was an ongoing act of thanksgiving, not just in words but in actions. She tirelessly worked to bring Christ’s love to the poor, the sick, and the suffering, saying, “I will go anywhere and do anything in order to communicate the love of Jesus to those who do not know Him or have forgotten Him.” Her mission was a reflection of her gratitude—sharing God’s love with others because of the love God had shown her.
This spirit of gratitude is reflected in today’s Gospel, where Jesus heals ten lepers, but only one returns to thank Him. Jesus asks, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they?" Like the one leper who returned to give thanks, we are called to recognize God's blessings in our lives and respond with gratitude.
There is a saying: "If you truly understand how much God loves you, you will spend your life responding to that love. And if you recognize all that God has done in your life, you'll never stop thanking Him."
As we reflect on the example of St. Francis Cabrini and the leper in the Gospel, let us ask ourselves: Am I truly grateful to God for all He has done for me? Do I thank Him not only with my words but with my actions? And do I show gratitude to the people God has placed in my life?
"May we, like the one leper, return to Jesus with praise and thanksgiving. And may we live with gratitude, striving to follow His example as saints."
May God bless us all.
