The Word of God
The Word of God
This morning we are going to get back to the Book of Col. 3 We have had several messages in the last few months out of Col. 3
Paul is writing to a group of believers at the church of Colossi and giving them some very specific instructions.
Just as we have issues in the church today that include all the things the church of Colossi was dealing with Paul was trying to teach them that if they were going to be heavenly minded there was some things that had to take place.
In V-1 Paul is teaching that if you have been saved then we have to seek those things which are above and not on the things of this world
We have to live our life as Jesus did, act like Jesus acted, talk like Jesus talked and most of all love like Jesus loved.
Then Paul talks about some things that us as saved people have to take off or set aside in our lives if we are going to be heavenly minded and be like Jesus.
In V-5 some of these things mentioned was fornication, uncleanness, idolatry.
In V-8 some additional thing we need to set aside is anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy and filthy communication out of your mouth, lie not to one another.
There are also some things that we have to put on as Christians and those things we have looked at also.
V-12 Bowels of mercy, kindness, humbleness, meekness, longsuffering and forgiving one another and above all these things love.
Then a couple Sundays ago we left off here in V-13 where Paul began to teach us how we can be successful in putting off and putting on all the things above.
We learned where the first thing we have to do as Christians is
Colossians 3:15 (KJV 1900)
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
We will never have peace with anyone, friends, family, church family strangers and most of all yourself until you have peace with God.
Not only have the peace but to let the peace of God rule in your hearts. That word rule meant to have complete control.
Now this morning let’s look at the next step in V-16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
We see here that the next step is for us to Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.
What does Paul mean when he says the “word of Christ”
I don’t think that is to hard to understand he means the bible, not only the red letters that are in your bible but the whole word the entire bible.
Paul is talking about the words from JESUS SPECIFICALLY AND ALSO THE WORDS ABOUT Jesus.
The word of God is like a light that gives us direction in this dark world.
Psalm 119:105 (KJV 1900)
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,
And a light unto my path.
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
I think we all agree when it is dark a light can be very helpful sometimes right. If we get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
A night light may help a young child not be so afraid of the dark.
The only time we have no use for a night light is in the daylight. That is what God’s word is saying here in 2 Peter. While Jesus is away from this earth and getting ready to return we are surrounded by darkness in this world.
But the word of God is like a light giving us direction. But one day when Jesus returns he will be the light but until that time his word is the light we have to have in this dark and corrupt world.
If you remember a few years ago when Obama came out with his plan to legalize gay marriage he said his christian faith caused him to do that.
He based that on the saying of the Golden Rule “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”
The problem with that is every true christian that was standing up against this sin was being condemned and we still are to this day.
The liberals question was why is it that we don't believe that the golden rule applies to everyone. Why are we discriminating against this stance on allowing gays to marry.
The question right back should have been why are they discriminating against polygamist, or someone marrying there brother or sister, or somebody marrying a dog, or somebody marrying themselves.
If marriage is any thing and everything why are we just good with legalizing gay marriage.
Why do they want to discriminate against all these other marriages.
One news reporters answer to that was because all those things are against the law.
To ignorant to realize that gay marriage was just like all of those it was against the law at that time also.
The point here is once you compromise on the word of God you have no more moral right to decide what is right or wrong what you have is chaos.
God’s word is a lamp and a light. It is the only thing that will help us make sense out of this crazy world.
Not only does God’s word give us direction as a whole but it also so gives us individual direction in our personal lives.
Let t he word of Christ dwell in you!!
What are some benefits from letting the Word of God dwell in you?
God’s word will produce spiritual growth in your life.
God’s plan for every Christian is for you to grow in your faith.
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Most people just want to be saved so they can go to heaven when they die and that of course is the most important but then they want to just go and live however they want to live.
The bible says the reason you receive Jesus is so you can walk in him. SO we can pattern our lives after him.
Paul says says so we can be rooted, that is one of those agriculture terms right plant a seed in the ground hoping that that seed takes root and grows into something.
The purpose to plant something is for it to grow. If you don’t know no more about God now than when you were saved then you you are spiritually dead not spiritually alive.
God wants us to grow. Then he uses that statement that has to do with architecture or building. “Built up in him”
When you are going to build, I have used this example many times you have to start with the foundation.
But you don’t just live on the foundation, The purpose of the foundation is so you can build something on top of it.
The bible says when you are a christian you have made the foundational decision to trust Christ as your saviour.
That decision to trust in Jesu is just the beginning then you are supposed to be built up. Construct a life that looks like Jesus.
One way we grow is by being fed the Word of God. It is the nutrients that you need to grow.
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
2. God’s Word is a deterrent to sin.
Sin is what messes up everything in our lives. It is what keeps God’s blessings out of our lives.
Remember Paul told us at the beginning of Chapter 3 that there are some sins that we need to put off set aside.
How do we say no to the sin that we struggle with everyday? The Word of God.
It gives us the desire and the ability to say no to sin.
In Ephesians Paul is talking about the physical armor we need to put on to fight against the whiles of the devil.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Paul says the word of God is like a sword. This word sword here is not referring to a large 4 ft. sword that you would picture a solider carrying around.
It is more of a dagger for the solider to use this sword he would be using it in a hand to hand combat situation.
He would have be be very precise as to where to stab the enemy in order to kill him. Some may say well what in the world does that have to do with this.
Bible says we need to be so skilled in knowing the word of God so when temptation comes in our life we know the exact spot to turn to in his word.
Remember in Matthew 4 Jesus was in the wilderness after fasting 40 days and satan came to him to temp him.
He came to Jesus and said why don’t you turn the stones into bread. He knew Jesus was hungry. Look how Jesus responded.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Then satan took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple and said why don’t you cast yourself off and let the angels come and protect you then everyone will know that you are the son of God.
Matthew 4:7 (KJV 1900)
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Then satan showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and told Jesus all these kingdoms could be yours if you just bow down to me.
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
What I want you to see here is 3 different times when Jesu was tempted he quoted scripture straight out of the Book of Deuteronomy.
Let me ask you this if your giving into temptation depended on you being able to quote scriptures out of the Book of Deuteronomy how ell would you do.
Most Christians probably don’t even know where the book is.
Why did he do that he didn;t quote scripture for Satan's benefit. Do you realize that satan knows the bible better than us.
Jesus quoted scripture for his own benefit.
Satan didn’t run away when he heard the Word of God. As Jesus recalled and quoted these scriptures it was just like a dagger that cut allowed Jesu to see what the real issues was.
It was the scriptures that helped Jesus say no to Satan's temptations and say yes to God.
God’s word is a powerful deterrent from sin.
Chuck Swindol told a story one time about when he was in Canada on a preaching trip. The trip was for 10 days. Eight of those days had already passed and he was getting very bored, didnt have anything to do, all alone nobody there with him. So he went down to the restaurant in the hotel and got something to eat. He finished eating and then got back on the elevator to go to his room and right before the door shut two beautiful women got on the elevator with him. Chuck pushed floor 6 and then asked the ladies which floor they were going to. The ladies spoke up and said floor 6 would be good with us. Then they said do you have any plans for the rest of the evening. Chuck then said God put a picture in his mind, it was not of his wife, his children, or church or even his reputation. God put in his mind a scripture he had memorized several years back.
Galatians 6:7 (KJV 1900)
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Chuck told those women I have a full evening planned tonight and got off the elevator.
That is the power of the word of God it is a deterrent to sin. That sin that keeps us from experiencing God’s blessings in our lives.
Last thing this morning is God’s Word allows you to have the peace of Christ.
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
you see the relationship between the two verses. The way you allow the peace of God to have the final say in your life is to let the word of Christ to dwell richly in you.
Most of all the worry and anxiety we have in our lives is because of some type of change that has taken place.
People and circumstances change but the one person that don’t change is God. He never changes
For who is God, save the Lord?
And who is a rock, save our God?
God is my strength and power:
And he maketh my way perfect.
We find the peace of God through salvation and we can keep the peace of God in our lives by Letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
SO this morning remember you will never have peace with anyone or anything until you have the peace of God in your heart.
