"We are gathered here today in the presence of God and in the company of friends and family to honor and celebrate the life of __________, who has passed from this life into the next. As we stand together at this final resting place, let us reflect on the love, the memories, and the moments shared. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we also find comfort in the knowledge that _________ is at peace, and we have the memories we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
We are reminded that death is not the end but a transition to a place of eternal rest and peace. Let us now offer a moment of silence, reflecting on ________________ life, the joy they brought, and the impact they made.
At this time, we come together to say our final goodbyes and to commit __________________ body to the earth, trusting that the love they gave us will continue to guide and comfort us in the days to com3e.
Psalm 23 ESV
A Psalm of David. 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
You have come out of your separate lives today to be together in this time and place because you are family and friends of ____________. Like all who have faced the death of a friend or family member, this is a time when feelings of loss come easily.
So also do feelings of grief, sadness, emptiness come into our lives at times such as this when we must say good-bye to one we have know as a member of our family or a friend. This is true even in the knowledge of ____________ long and loving life.
This is also a time filled with good memories, though. One of the hopes I hold for all who gather at such times as this -- is the hope that we will look upon our joyful memories of the one we come to honor, as one of the more powerful reasons for gathering together. For, even in the midst of our sadness, this is a time for remembering the fullness of__________ life that he did live as we know he was taken early, and we celebrate those memories. But even still, even in the midst of such good memories, there is something more important about gathering in this time. You see, most importantly, this is a time to recognize and worship God who is present with us in the midst of all life, and moves with us in power and grace beyond even death.
And now, in the midst of even the pain of grief, let us share in the grace of God’s love as perfect love cast out all fear. We know god doesn’t call us to be afraid of death, but to embrace it with the hope that we will reside with him in eternity. It is important that we are honest about our grief for those like________________, but it is also important we recognize this time as an opportunity to rely on God's strength.
At a time like this when we are dealing with a variety of emotions, and questions and our own inability to know what death is all about ... this time becomes for us an opportunity in which we can renew our trust in God. And also, from Psalm 121, we hear of the promise of God’s eternal care: I lift up my eyes to the hills-- from where will my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.
Genesis 3:19 ESV
By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Committal
We now come to the solemn moment when we commit the body of our dear ______________to the earth, where it will rest until the day of resurrection. As we do this, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the certainty of God's eternal love.
From the very beginning, we were made from dust, and to dust we return. And yet, though our bodies are frail, our spirits are eternal. The words of Scripture remind us: 'The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.' We trust that in God's time, the body that rests here will be renewed in glory, for death is not the end, but a transition into new life.
We also remember that we are not alone in this moment. We are surrounded by the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us: loved ones, saints, and all those who have passed from this world. We are united in a bond of love and faith that transcends death.
And so, we lay ______________ to rest with reverence, knowing that while their earthly journey has ended, their soul continues to live in the presence of God. ___________ is now in the arms of the Creator, free from suffering, embraced by everlasting peace.
