Psalms I: Chapters 1–41 (King James Version) Psalm 40: How to Be Lifted out of the Pit of Despair and Trouble, 40:1–17

But when we cry out to the LORD in faith and repentance, He rescues us. He pulls us out of the pit and establishes us on the Rock—Jesus Christ—where we are safe and secure for eternity (Mt. 7:24–25; 1 Pe. 2:6–7)! He gives us a new song of redemption to sing (Re. 5:9). As we sing and boldly share our testimony of God’s glorious grace, others will trust the LORD and be saved.

Matthew 7:24 ““Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Matthew 7:25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.”
1 Peter 2:6 “For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.””
1 Peter 2:7“So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,””
Revelation 5:9 “And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,”

Psalms I: Chapters 1–41 (King James Version) Psalm 40: How to Be Lifted out of the Pit of Despair and Trouble, 40:1–17

The first verse puts before us the fact of His humiliation. The Son of God came to this earth and took the place of dependence under God His Father. In His perfect life on earth, He waited patiently for Jehovah. What the great purpose of the incarnation was is stated later in this Psalm. However, even this first verse directs our attention at once to His suffering and His obedience unto death. The cry which He uttered and again the joyous announcement that He was heard reminds us of Hebrews 5:7–8. The

Hebrews 5:7 “In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.”
Hebrews 5:8 “Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.”
Psalms I: Chapters 1–41 (King James Version) Psalm 40: How to Be Lifted out of the Pit of Despair and Trouble, 40:1–17

The horrible pit and miry clay are descriptive of that deepest place of agony and death into which He went, when He was made sin for us. Joseph was cast into a pit and what anguish of soul he had …

Jeremiah 38:6 “So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.”
Psalms I: Chapters 1–41 (King James Version) Psalm 40: How to Be Lifted out of the Pit of Despair and Trouble, 40:1–17

Jeremiah was cast into a dungeon filled with mire into which he sank (Jer. 38:6). How great was his suffering! But what is it all in comparison with Him, who knew no sin and was made sin for us, who went into the dungeon and sank into the miry clay! Who can describe what it meant for Him to go there!
