Romans 5:12–21 NKJV
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

TS: The section of Scripture we will be looking at today is complex and complicated and contains some of the deepest theological truths in the Book of Romans. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia refers to this passage as “the logical center of the epistle, the central point to which everything that precedes has converged, and out of which everything else will flow.”
The Presbyterian preacher Donald Grey Barnhouse preached 25 sermons on these verses alone!
In this text Paul contrasts the work of Adam (the sinful father of all people) with the work of Christ (the sinless Savior of all people).

The Sinful Father

(5:12–15, 16a, 17a, 18a, 19a, 20a, 21a)
Genesis 2:16–17 NKJV
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Adam and Eve had a whole garden, even a whole planet except 1 tree. Yet it was the forbidden fruit which became the object of temptation. We don’t know if they had any curiosity. We do know Eve was close to the tree and Satan tempted her. Adam freely took the fruit from Eve with no resistance at all.
Now, let us consider
1. The reality of his act (5:12a):
Romans 5:12 NKJV
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
“When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race.”
Something unknown before this, was sin.
In sinning, Adam and Eve “fell” They lost their innocence and sinless life. Yes, they gained knowledge of good and evil, but at too high a cost.
They were broken and no longer fit to enter God’s presence as before.
Sin entered the human race
2. The scope of his act (5:12b–13):
Romans 5:12–13 NKJV
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
“So death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.”
He is saying that Adam’s sin involved us all in a situation of sin and death from which there is no escape other than in Christ.
Leon Lamb Morris
Death entered creation
We are born and begin our journey to the grave.
Sin is the reason behind sickness, death, and strife.
In one of looking, we all sinned with Adam since our DNA was there.
More specifically, we are born with a sin nature and Scripture declares that we all commit sin!
3. The nature of his act (5:19a):
Romans 5:19 NKJV
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
“Because one person disobeyed God, many people became sinners.”
We sin because it is in our nature due to Adam’s disobedience
God gave Adam and Eve 1 rule.... they disobeyed
God in His word has spelled out with much detail what He expects us to believe and do.
We also disobey Him
4. The results of his act (5:14–15a, 16a, 17a, 18a, 21a)
a. Imputed judgment on Adam’s posterity (5:14):
“They all died anyway—even though they did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did.”
Death has entered the world
Sadly, we have all been touched by that punishment
It even impacted the whole world
Adam’s sin has spoiled his environment, and it suffers along with him since both are of the “dust.
Kenneth A. Mathews
b. Eternal judgment on all unsaved (5:15a, 16a, 17a, 18a, 21a):
Romans 5:15–18 NKJV
Romans 5:21 NKJV
so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Adam’s sin brought death and condemnation upon all people.
That condemnation leads to eternal torment in Hell if we die in our sins.
5. The relationship of the law to his act (5:20a):
Romans 5:20 NKJV
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,
“God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were.”
As we have read through this text, we see the inheritance from our Father in the flesh Adam. His sin, brought a sin nature to us all.
Don’t think that God is unjust! Adam gave us our nature, but we are to blame for our own condemnation
We all give in to that nature and sin ourselves.

The Sinless Savior

(5:15b, 16b, 17b, 18b, 19b, 20b, 21b): Because of Christ’s death, people can be saved in spite of their sin.
NOW for the GOOD NEWS!
This would be a very depressing text if Paul had not been making a contrast. As we went through our study of Adam, there were several contrasts with our sinless Savior
1. The scope of his act (5:15b, 18b)
a. “Jesus Christ … brought forgiveness to many through God’s bountiful gift” (5:15b).
Romans 5:15 NKJV
But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.
Grace of God and the gift abounded to many
We are saved by God’s grace.
Jesus took our place in death to satisfy God’s justice.
Now He gives forgiveness!
b. “Christ’s one act of righteousness makes all people right in God’s sight and gives them life” (5:18b).
Romans 5:18 NKJV
Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.
God’s grace is suffient enough for all to be saved. There will never be a day when a sinner will cry out in faith and God say, “Sorry, grace has been used up, there is no more forgiveness to give.
2. The nature of his act (5:19b):
Romans 5:19 NKJV
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
“Because one other person obeyed God, many people will be made right in God’s sight.”
Jesus’ obedience satisfied God’s judment and now like a sacrificial offering in the OT, it washes our sin and makes us righteous.
3. The results of his act (5:16b, 17b, 21b)
a. Justification (5:16b):
Romans 5:16 NKJV
And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.
All people can now be accepted by God.
NEVER forget
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
b. Sanctification (5:17b):
Romans 5:17 NKJV
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
All people can now be made righteous in God’s eyes.
c. Glorification (5:21b):
Romans 5:21 NKJV
so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All people can now have eternal life.
This is the contrast to death brought by Adam
Eternal life
As Warren Wiersbe said
Christ has regained all that Adam lost because of sin.
Warren W. Wiersbe
4. The relationship of sin to his act (5:20b):
Romans 5:20 NKJV
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,
“As people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful kindness became more abundant.”

Conc

God’s grace saves and sustains us
Jumping ahead a few chapters we read of our reesponse to this:
Romans 10:8–13 NKJV
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
