Connect with Christ’s Motivation

Jesus’ motivation was the glory of the Father through fellowship with the Father.
The most important thing that Jesus did every day was not the miracles, it was not the training of his disciples, it was not even the preaching, but it was the prayer. The time spent in fellowship with the Father.
We consistently see Jesus taking time to be alone with the Father. Here we have the curtain on that most holy union pulled back so that we can witness the content of his prayer.
First notice the union that he had with the Father. This is a term of fellowship, relationship. He is HOLY in verse 11. He is RIGHTEOUS in verse 25, but He is always FATHER throughout.
This union found its expression in prayer.
Do you know the reason we worry so much? Well, I’ll tell you worry looks at God through our circumstances. But prayer looks at our circumstances through God. - Adrian Rogers
Jesus’ purpose was to bring glory to the Father in all that he did!

Connect with Christ’s Mission

The Salvation of Sinners (vv. 6-10)

Salvation is all about bringing us back into relationship with God. John 17:3 ““This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
He came to reveal the work and words of the Father so that we might have a relationship with God.

The Security of the Saved (vv. 11-16)

Kept In the Father’s Name
To be kept in His name is a guarantee of fellowship.
“That they may be one, even as we are one.”
To receive the name of the Lord is to enter into fellowship with Him. (verse 3)
Revelation 3:11–12 ESV
I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
To be kept in His name is pronouncement of blessing. (v. 13)
It is the blessing of joy in relationship with the Lord.
Numbers 6:23–27 ESV
“Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them, The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. “So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”
To be kept in His name is a promise of protection. (v. 14)
Psalm 20 - The Lord’s name is a source of help, victory, and salvation! Psalm 20:1–2 “May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob set you securely on high! May He send you help from the sanctuary And support you from Zion!” Psalm 20:5 “We will sing for joy over your victory, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.” Psalm 20:6–7 “Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand. Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God.”
Kept from the Evil One (v. 15)
Jesus did not pray for his disciples to be transported out of the world, but that they would be kept from the wiles of the evil one (Satan).
His mission depended on them remaining in the world to spread the good news.

The Sanctification of His Disciples (vv 17-18)

Because they would be in the world, Jesus prayed that his disciples would be distinct from the world. Set apart. Sanctified!
We are sanctified by the Word of God. The Truth!
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
