Welcome to Vertical Church
Acts 2:42 (LSB)
And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
As a church we seek to uphold the values of the NT church as seen in Acts 2:42 -
We are Trinitarian - while God is one in essence, He is three in person: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit
We believe in the sovereignty of God - sovereign over all creation, sovereign over the affairs of men, sovereign over salvation
We believe in the authority of the Bible - Scripture alone is the Word of God
We are Biblical in our theology - we are a bible teaching church
We believe that the Church is not a building or a denomination but a people - those who are truly in Christ and embrace the truths that were embraced and confessed by the New Testament Church, the apostolic church.
We are evangelical - we believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
We are a Vertical Church - we believe that all true worship and living is Vertical, God directed and for the glory of God alone.
Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone, For the glory of God alone - join us on Sundays
Call to Worship - Psalm 100
Psalm 100 LSB
A Psalm of Thanksgiving. 1 Make a loud shout to Yahweh, all the earth. 2 Serve Yahweh with gladness; Come before Him with joyful songs. 3 Know that Yahweh, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. 5 For Yahweh is good; His lovingkindness endures forever And His faithfulness, generation unto generation.
Scripture Reading - Romans 3:27-31
Romans 3:27–31 LSB
27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that faith, is one. 31 Do we then abolish the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.

Romans 3:27-31 The Implications of Justification
Sermon
Justification - the legal declaration of righteousness.
simul iustus et peccator - simuataneously righteous and sinner
God declares the sinner guilty and then declares the guilty sinner righteous based on the righteousness of Christ
(1) Propitiation
Romans 3:25 LSB
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith, for a demonstration of His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
“to propitiate” means “to satisfy the wrath of God against sin,” “to turn away God's wrath,” or “to offer a sacrifice that appeases God's just judgment and righteous anger against us and our sin.” And note, Jesus is not simply “the propitiator” but the “propitiation.” He is what satisfies the justice of God.
Romans 3:26 LSB
26 for the demonstration of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
(2) The implications of justification
There are three implications, and each implication is framed with a question, answer, and explanation.
(2.1) The humility of the believer
Romans 3:27–28 LSB
27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
Q: Boasting
A: it is excluded - the door is shut, there is no room
Ex: The principle of faith leaves means that it is all of God
Ephesians 2:8–9 LSB
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not of works, so that no one may boast.
(2.2) There are no distinctions
Romans 3:29–30 LSB
29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that faith, is one.
Q: Is God the God of Jews only
A: Of all people
Ex: God is one. God justifies by faith not by ethnicity
Deuteronomy 6:4 LSB
4 “Hear, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is one!
Acts 4:12 LSB
12 “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
There is one God, one way of salvation, one Savior! And though faith there is only one body of Christ
Ephesians 4:4–6 LSB
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
(2.3) The Bible is our foundation of faith AND practice
Romans 3:31 LSB
31 Do we then abolish the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 LSB
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Matthew 5:17 LSB
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Q: Does faith abolish the Law of God? (katargeo) means ‘to make of no effect’ or ‘to cause to cease.’ Have we made the moral Law to be cancelled and irrelevant if we are justified apart from the Law?
A: May it never be! Note Paul’s answer, “May it never be!” (verse 31). This is stated in two words in the Greek, me gnoito, which is the strongest, most emphatic negative that can be conveyed in the original language. It means ‘absolutely not.’ It is not just “no,” but ‘a thousand times no.’ Or ‘not now, not never.’
Ex: We establish the Law. “Establish” (histemi) is a strong Greek word that means ‘to cause something or someone to stand.’ It also means ‘to make firm’ or ‘to cause a thing to keep its place.’ Thus, Paul asserts that his teaching on justification does not nullify the Law, but establishes it.
The Law:
The entire OT v 19
The first five books of the Bible - the Law of Moses v 21
The ceremonial Law - the sacrificial system - this was fulfilled by Christ, the final sacrifice
the civil law - the governance of Israel
The moral law, summarized by the 10 commandments
The moral law of God is still in effect. We are still to have no other gods before us. We are still not to take God’s name in vain. We are still not to have a graven image of God. We are still to honor our father and our mother. We are still not to murder. We are still not to commit adultery. We are still not to steal. We are still not to bear false witness. We are still not to covet.
All scripture is God breathed, breathed out by God. God’s word will stand for forever. It is the sword of the Spirit We are saved by grace though faith. By faith we are justified, declared righteous.
But faith does not stand alone. True faith is demonstrated by the transformation of the Spirit, lives that live in obedience to the word of God and the commands of Christ. As Jesus said
Matthew 28:20 LSB
20 teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Benediction
Now may the Savior, who has abolished death, come to you in your sorrows, stay by your side in the darkness, carry you through your distresses, and give you joy in the morning.
