Maturing in the Way of the Lord
What does it mean to mature? To develop mentally and emotionally to behave in a responsible way. To become more sensitive to what God wants. A deeper desire to please the Lord.
1 Corinthians 13:11
1 Corinthians 3:2
Lets take notice of David how he has matured in the way of the Lord.
David as a shepherd boy was courageous new no fear tenacious determined had no problem killing anyone that got in his way.
1 Samuel 17:34-35 David killed a Bear and Lion
Abigail saved Nabal life
So David was a strong willed person whom God used but not very humble until his sin was pointed out by the prophet Nathan.
There is a big change in David from being the shepherd boy and the king he has become now.
Maturing in the Way of the Lord
(1-3) Joab Kings David nephew and commander is told that David is crying for his son. So the people come home from the battle quietly when normally it would be like a parade cheering a celebration but this was a different type of war in fact this was a civil war because this war was actually between father and son.
(4-6) While King David was crying Joab comes in as if David is’nt king and rebukes David for mourning over the death of his son and not praising his soldiers for saving the lives of his family and friends. Joab says you love your enemies and hate your friends.
Do you think Joab was wrong for the way he was talking to David?
Do you think David was wrong for acting the way he did over the death of his son?
Do you think a younger David or a less mature David would have reacted this way?
(7-8) Joab tells David to go out speak to your troops and let them now how proud you are of them unless they abandon you and Israel becomes defense less. David listens and sits at the gate of the city they were in and the troops come to gate were David was and David’s being at the gate showed support for his men.
(9-10) The part of Israel that was on Absalom side after losing the battle was arguing about what they should do now seeing that Absalom was dead the only thing they could do was to welcome the king back.
(11-12) David sends his loyal priest Zadok an Abiathar to speak to the elders concerning bringing him back to Jerusalem and reuniting the 12 tribes David thought that the elders of Judah would have been the first to move on that because King David him self is from the tribe of Judah.
(13-14) David makes Amasa his nephew commander in the stead of Joab there by uniting the northern and southern armies of Israel David demoted Joab for disobeying his order not to kill Absalom.
(15-16) Here the king is making his return to Jerusalem. Guess who is here Shimei a relative of Saul who cursed and threw stones at David when he was on the run from Absalom.
(17-20) Ziba Mephibosheth’s servant who lied on him was there a ferry boat came to take the Kings family back and Shimei is there begging for forgiveness because he knows he should be put to death.
(21-23) Abishai says should’nt Shimei die for what he did to the King? David does not kill Shimei at this time but allows him to live.
Do you think that the young David would have allowed Shimei to live?
(24-30) As a sign of Mephibosheth mourning he never washed his clothes trimmed his beard or took care of his disability while David was gone. David asked why he didn’t leave with him Mephibosheth said Ziba tricked him and made him look bad before the King. Mephibosheth said how much he appreciated how the King spared his life and allowed him to sit at his table. Although David was lied to Mephibosheth didn’t care about the land just the well being of David.
(31-32) Barzillai was a man that took care of King David while he was in Mahanaim that was in his 80 that David wanted to go over the Jordan with him.
(33-37) Barzillai was up in age an preferd to just go over the Jordan with David and return home so he could be burried with his father and mother. He had a servant that he wanted to go in his stead named Chimham.
(38-43) Israel thinks that Judah is trying to get favor from the king by bringing him back to Jerusalem. Then Israel is saying they have more right to the King because Israel consisted of 10 tribes and Judah only consisted of Judah and Benjamin.
But do we see how much King David matured when he was a younger man he wouldn’t have thought twice about killing people like Shimei.
