Accept easily?

Do you accept things easily?
Do you struggle to accept hard things?
Do you question things you are asked to accept?
There are things in our life that we face that may not be easy to accept, and yes, this includes bible things. Jesus in His teaching today, while hard to hear, is very important to understand for us to look at application for us today.
The setting as you will see in the passage is set at a dinner in the home of a Pharisee who invites Jesus to share a meal. I will bet when we read the scripture, the interaction that in hind-site the Pharisee would not have invited Jesus. Or that this was all a set up to try to catch Jesus in something wrong, so as to accuse Him. You can make your own conclusion on that.
This morning we will read and break this into three sections:
Woe to the Pharisees (Lk11:37-44)
Woe to the scribes (Lk11:45-52)
Woe to taking away the keys (Lk11:52-54)

Woe to Pharisees

Luke 11:37–38 NASB95
37 Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially washed before the meal.
Luke 11:39–40 NASB95
39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. 40 “You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
Luke 11:41–42 NASB95
41 “But give that which is within as charity, and then all things are clean for you. 42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
Luke 11:43–44 NASB95
43 “Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places. 44 “Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.
Any general observations you make, or anything stick out to you in this passage?
What is the thing the Pharisee was surprised by (v.38)?
That Jesus had not first ceremonially washed before the meal.
What is the accusation Jesus makes against the Pharisees (v.39)?
You clean the outside, but the inside is full of robbery and wickedness.
Any observation you see (v.40)?
Jesus calls them foolish because it is the same creator of the outside and the inside.
When you look at (vv.41-42) you see the instructions and the woe, describe it.
You should give in charity (love) and give regard to the love of God.
The woe is they give tithe of everything, but forget about giving in love.
You see the next two woe’s (vv.43-44), what are they?
You love chief seats and respectful greeting.
You are like concealed tombs
Now lets’ pull some stuff from this passage for understanding and application
Woe for you clean outside, inside (heart) is unclean
Woe for you tithe, but neglect justice and love
Woe for you want public recognition
Woe for being unmarked graves
There is the admonishment about the outside being clean but the inside (the heart) is not clear, is not pure. It is important that we know the importance of having an inner purity of heart, let God who created the outer and inner make changes in your life so that you are not neglecting the things to be done in love.
He calls them out, Woe! about they give their tithes but neglect justice and love.
We need to be a people who live adhering to the word, but live filled with compassion too in helping, serving others.
The Pharisees look for public recognition, chief seats and public greetings.
The chief seats are normally the seats in front of the synagogue that face the congregation.
They were looking for the praise of man, instead of all praise to God.
Calls is woe for they are unmarked graves.
Graves were clearly marked, normally with white wash so that no one would step on them, for by doing so according to (Num19:16) they would be unclean for seven days.
They were like unmarked graves, look good, making appear to be good and spiritual on the outside, but inside the were not only dead, but leading others to death.

Woe to the scribes

Luke 11:45–46 NASB95
45 One of the lawyers said to Him in reply, “Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too.” 46 But He said, “Woe to you lawyers as well! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
Luke 11:47–48 NASB95
47 “Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. 48 “So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.
Luke 11:49–50 NASB95
49 “For this reason also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute, 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,
Luke 11:51–52 NASB95
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.’ 52 “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
What stands out to you in this passage?
The lawyers (scribes) were insulted and that ended up with a woe (v.46), what is the woe about?
They they weigh people down with their burdens, make it hard for people to bear, yet they do not take on (touch) the burdens themselves
The teachers of the law imposed heavy burdens on the people withing offering help to carry those burdens.
What we can learn from this is leaders should be burden bearers and sharers not to bring, put burdens on others.
There is another woe (v.47) what is it in (vv.47-48)?
They build tombs for the prophets whom their fathers killed, so they agree with the deeds of the fathers. There is a problem here, they show agreement with what the fathers did to God’s spokesmen (the prophets) by their actions.
How was the wisdom of God made known (v.49)?
God sent prophets and apostles, of which some were to be killed and some they would persecute
What does Jesus say is going to be charged “to this generation,” (v.50)?
The blood of all of the prophets from the foundation of the world.
They were honoring the prophets by burying them, but they were rejecting their message.
In (v.51) we see the first (Able) and the last (Zechariah).
Zechariah was the last prophet in the Jewish bible found in (2Chr24)
We need to be a people that honor Gods message by keeping it as well as His messengers who bring the message by listening and applying God’s word.

Woe you take away the keys

Luke 11:52–53 NASB95
52 “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.” 53 When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects,
Luke 11:54 NASB95
54 plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.
What do you see as the reason for the woe in (v.52)?
The woe is against the lawyers (scribes) for taking away the key of knowledge.
It is also that they hindered others.
The lawyers, the scribes are the experts of the law, yet they were not applying to law and entering God’s kingdom, and what made it worse is they were hindering, keeping others from entering because of their misguided, misapplied teaching.
It is important as a teacher/preacher that I know (have knowledge) and wisdom (application) and do live in accordance to God’s word. I need to rightly divide the word and rightly deliver the word and apply it personally.
As a Christian we need to help, spur, encourage one another in the truth of God’s word to help people to grow in their walk with God.
The woe was not well received (v.53); what did the lawyers (scribes) do then?
They became hostile, and started to question Him on many subjects
Is this not the case you have seen before when you speak things that are hard sometimes that it is not well received and it ends up with hostility coming into play?
Instead of humbling receiving the rebuke (correction) they were outraged and hostile.
So, what do we do with this? Consider a couple of verses (Pro9:8; 15:12, 13:1, 15:32)
Proverbs 9:8 NASB95
8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you.
then
Proverbs 15:12 NASB95
12 A scoffer does not love one who reproves him, He will not go to the wise.
In those two verses you can see that the fool (scoffer) hates those who correct them.
Next let me give you another, for they do not listen to correction (Pro13:1)
Proverbs 13:1 NASB95
1 A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
And yes, even one more they despise even their own soul (Pro15:32
Proverbs 15:32 NASB95
32 He who neglects discipline despises himself, But he who listens to reproof acquires understanding.
In (v.54) you know why they were questioning Him, it was plotting to catch him in something to accuse Him of.

Conclusion

When Jesus accepted the invitation, He knew there would be opportunity to teach, and He never shy’d away from teaching. This teaching was hard to hear, hard to accept, hard to do anything with something they do not accept.
Woe, you think you are clean, but you are not clean, pure on the inside
Woe, you give, but neglect justice and love.
Woe, you want to look good, want the praises of man instead of the praises of God
Woe, you are misleading people and leading people to spiritual death
Woe, you are burdening people with things even yourself do not do.
Woe, you honor the prophets (the people) but not their message.
Woe, you take away the keys to knowledge; And in doing so you lead others away, keep others from knowing the way to enter the kingdom of God.
May we be a people who can look within, ask God through prayer to help us look within to see if there are things we need to change to be a better vessel for the Lord. He calls for us to be pure from the inside out and to know and apply His teachings in our lives.
