Praises and Promises, Part I and II (Lessons 39-40) 1/7/2025

Introduction:

* We have seen that the promise made to Abraham was the prominent teaching of the Old Testament.
* The promise in the New Testament is also the key element in the inspired “writer’s” minds. (please familiarize yourself with Lk1:5-2:39)

Aim:

* To get a vital link between the Old Testament and the New Testament teaching regarding the promise to Abraham.
* This will be proven through the recorded praises made by devout men and women who anticipated the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham, that “in thy seed all nations would be blessed” (Gen12:3, 18:18) All of those made prior to Jesus birth.

Outline:

Mary’s praise to God and the seed promise (Lk1:46-56)
* You see Mary’s praise (vv.46-47)
* You can see God’s providence (vv.48-54a) -you can see it through the ages.
* You can see God’s purpose (v.54b) -to give help, to demonstrate, give mercy.
* God’s promise (v.55) - looks back all the way to the promise to Abraham and his descendants. (maybe note down Gal3:29 too; you too are heirs to the promise) - God our Savior remembers the promise, fulfills the promise through the ages.
Some more comments, thoughts:
* The promise is remembered. (v.56)
* The promise is realized (note down vv.39-45) realized in Mary’s womb
* The promise fulfilled (In Jesus the Christ) (note down v.35)
* The promise is the purpose of God’s providential activity.
Zacharias’ praise to God and the seed promise (Lk1:67-80, focal v.73)
* Analysis.
* Praise for what God had done (vv.67-75)
* Accomplished redemption (vv.67-68)
* Raised horn of salvation (vv.69-71)
* To be called a prophet (v.76a)
* To prepare the way for the Lord (v.76b).
)
* Purpose of God’s visitation (vv.78-79)
* To show mercy (v.78)
* To shine in the darkness (v.79a)
* To guide into the way of peace (v.79b)
Some good reference points for your notes (2Sam7:11-17; Mt1:1)
* Promise and Prophesy, redemption (v.68); salvation (v.69)
This leads us to Jesus Christ
* Prophesy (v.70); see 1Sam2:10, he would be a prophet of Most High God (vv.76-77b)He would be the dayspring from on High (vv.78-79) also note other scriptures Ps18:2, 89:17, 132:17. In all of this he (John) is to go before, to make ready the way, to give knowledge of Salvation.
Next is the Promise (vv.72-73)
* Again, note down other scriptures we have looked at before, Gen12:1-3, 18:18, 22:16-18)
Just a few more comments
* God’s covenant/oath that was made with Abraham is remembered.
* The promise of salvation is, and was prophesied out of David’s seed line.
* And finally John the baptizer will prepare the way for Christ
I know there is a lot in this section; Let me draw a conclusion before we press on:
* God’s provision through the ages, the prophesies and the fulfillment are praiseworthy as it starts to come to pass at Jesus birth.
* The promise remember, the oath is ratified (proven) the prophesies are realized and a Savior comes (Jesus) to bring redemption and salvation.
End of Lesson 39
Lesson 40: Praises in Luke and the promise -Part II (Lesson 40)

Introduction:

* This lesson continues to look at the statements of praise to God and the promise to Abraham.
* Focus of this lesson will be the praise made at the birth of Jesus.

Aim:

* To see further testimony in the inspired record related to the Old Testament promise and prophesy.
* To know that the incarnation of Jesus Christ signals the fulfilling of the promise and the prophesy.

Outline:

* The shepherds praise and the seed promise (Lk2:9-14, 21)
* The angel’s revelation (vv.9-12)
* The angelic refrain (vv.13-14)
* The shepherds realization (vv.15-19)
* The shepherds rejoicing (v.20)
Let this sink in “Good tiding of great joy to all peoples (v.11); This is born to you, this day, in the city of David, The Savior, Christ the Lord!
Comments on this:
* The birth of Jesus as witnessed by the shepherds with the praises is proof of the presence of the promise and fulfillment of the prophesy.
* This promise is concerned about the good news of a Savior
* Next, Simon’s praise and the seed promise (Lk2:25-35)
* Simon’s character (v.25a)
* Simon’s anticipation (v.25b)
* Simon’s revelation (vv.26-28)
* Simon’s declaration (vv.29-35)
Simon was looking for the consolation of Israel; what he saw was the Salvation (Jesus)
Comments on this:
* This salvation had been prepared by God
* This salvation was prepared for all peoples, both Jews and Gentiles (see Gen22:16-18)
* Jesus was set for the rise and fall of many
* Jesus was a sign that would be spoken against

Conclusion:

* Maybe you should also note the words of Anna who came at that time (v.38)
* The words concerning Jesus as the fulfillment of prophesy, at the fulness of time (See Eph1:10-11, Gal4:4)
* Finally the Savior of all mankind, the Seed of Abraham, seed of David is born into the world! He is the Lord’s Christ and man’s Savior.
