“Thank You Lord for Your Blessings on Me.” The lyrics to that old song come to mind today as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving later this week. We have so much to praise the Lord for! He has done so much for us! Thanksgiving should be more than one day a year. It should be a lifestyle. But, how could we ever begin to repay the Lord for all of the blessings He has bestowed upon us? In Psalm 116:12, the psalmist asked it this way, “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?” After recounting all of God’s goodness toward him, the psalmist says, “I will offer to You [Lord] the sacrifice of thanksgiving” (Psalm 116:17). In today’s message, we will explore the meaning of The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving and learn why our praise is so powerful.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 116:17 NKJV
17 I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, And will call upon the name of the Lord.

INTRODUCTION

The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving
Not your burnt turkey!
Connected to the Peace Offering (Leviticus 3 and Leviticus 7)
Part of the 5 main sacrifices (Burnt, Grain, Peace, Sin, Trespass).
Peace offering included a wave offering and a heave offering.
Leviticus 7:28–34 NKJV
28 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 29 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offering to the Lord shall bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his peace offering. 30 His own hands shall bring the offerings made by fire to the Lord. The fat with the breast he shall bring, that the breast may be waved as a wave offering before the Lord. 31 And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. 32 Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. 33 He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part. 34 For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’ ”
It is a Sacrifice of the Heart
Psalm 51:16–17 NKJV
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.
A Sacrifice Means it Must Cost Something
2 Samuel 24:24 NKJV
24 Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

Reminds me of the story of the 10th Leper
Luke 17:11–19 NKJV
11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”
