Biblical Counsel: Seeing “The Way Down” Pt. 1 Session 3 – How Unbelieving moments lead to Discontentment (Romans 1:21-23) The question of the night is this: What does it look like if the burdens of life have a hold on me, and what should I do about it? v The Danger of Unbelief – It Leads to the Way Down Ø We give ourselves over to unbelief in our thinking when we do what two things? § When we fail to _____________ Him as God. § When we fail to __________ __________ to Him. Ø Tracking our thoughts becomes important in tracking our spiritual progress. Ø The goal is knowing our _____________. v Unbelief is _________________, because it places things in the wrong order. Ø Unbelief causes moments, or sometimes longer, of foolishness. Ø Unbelief causes an exchange of the truth of God for a lie. Ø To reject anything that God says is true is to be _____________ of unbelief. v There is great HOPE in admitting this! Ø We have promise of constant forgiveness in scripture, (1 John 1:9). Ø We have multiple examples of believers in scripture who had struggles with this at times in their lives. § Moses (Numbers 20:1-13). § Disciples in the boat (Mark 4:40). § The writer of Hebrews warns (12:1-3) that we can become fainthearted (15) when not running with endurance. v We must keep ourselves from unbelief, because it will lead to discontent. Ø Keep our minds ________________ on God. (Isaiah 26:3) Ø Unbelief is a _______________ sin that can give way to discontent. Ø Discontentment is the ____________________ of not having what we have decided in our unbelief that we must have in order for life to work. Ø Discontent is when the symptoms of the unbelieving heart begin to appear. Ø Discontent is often presented by thinking or expressions of: § “If only…” § “I should be…” or “I should have…” § “I don’t like…” v These kinds of thought are dangerous because they lead to a ___________ for more (James 1:14). Ø We must be addressing the issues of the heart by trusting in the Lord. § We must believe what He Promises. § We must believe what He says. § We must believe what He is doing. Ø Do not be like the Israelites in Numbers 11-16. v What are some practical things we can do if we struggle with these thoughts or expressions? Ø Take the time to make a list of these thoughts. Ø The “If only’s,” the “I should’s,” and the “I don’t like’s.” Ø ________________, _______________, and _________________. Ø Write down what you should be believing instead.
