### **Sermon on Spiritual Maturity as a Born-Again Believer**
**Title:** Growing in Spiritual Maturity as a Born-Again Believer
**Scripture Reading:** Ephesians 4:13-15, Hebrews 5:12-14, Colossians 2:6-7
**Introduction:**
Today, we are diving deep into a topic that is critical for every born-again believer: *spiritual maturity*. It's one thing to be born again and receive the gift of salvation, but it is another to grow and mature in Christ. Just as a newborn baby grows and develops over time, so must we as Christians grow in our faith and relationship with God.
**I. What is Spiritual Maturity?**
Spiritual maturity is the process of growing in your faith and becoming more Christ-like in character and behavior. It is not about age, how long you’ve been a Christian, or your knowledge of Scripture. It’s about becoming more like Jesus in every aspect of your life.
**Scripture Reference:**
- **Ephesians 4:13-15 (NKJV):**
“...till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ.”
Here, Paul emphasizes that spiritual maturity involves growing up into the fullness of Christ. It is about stability, discernment, and Christ-like behavior.
**II. Signs of Spiritual Immaturity**
Before we look at the characteristics of spiritual maturity, let's identify what immaturity looks like so we can assess our own spiritual growth.
1. **Lack of Discernment**
- **Hebrews 5:12-14 (NLT):**
"You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right."
- Spiritual immaturity is marked by an inability to discern right from wrong or to apply God’s Word to everyday life.
2. **Instability in Faith**
- Ephesians 4:14 describes immature believers as those who are easily swayed by false teachings and influenced by the world. Immature Christians struggle with doubts and are not rooted in their faith.
3. **Self-Centeredness**
- An immature believer tends to focus on their own needs and desires rather than the needs of others or the will of God.
**III. Characteristics of Spiritual Maturity**
What does a spiritually mature Christian look like?
1. **Rooted in the Word of God**
- **Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV):**
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
- A mature believer is deeply rooted in Scripture, allowing the Word of God to be the foundation of their life. They meditate on it, live by it, and use it as a guide for their decisions.
2. **Exhibits the Fruit of the Spirit**
- **Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV):**
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."
- Spiritual maturity is evidenced by the consistent display of the fruit of the Spirit. It is a sign that the Holy Spirit is at work in their life, producing godly character traits.
3. **Lives a Life of Faith and Obedience**
- **James 1:22 (NKJV):**
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
- Mature believers don’t just hear the Word; they live it out. They act on their faith through obedience, even when it’s difficult.
4. **Endures Trials with Patience**
- **James 1:2-4 (NIV):**
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
- A mature believer sees trials as opportunities for growth. They trust God’s sovereignty and believe that He is working all things together for their good.
**IV. The Process of Spiritual Growth**
Spiritual maturity is not instantaneous; it is a process that involves consistent effort and commitment.
1. **Abide in Christ**
- **John 15:5 (ESV):**
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."
- Abiding in Christ means having an intimate, ongoing relationship with Him. It’s through this connection that we receive the spiritual nourishment needed to grow.
2. **Commitment to Prayer and Fellowship**
- **1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV):**
"Pray without ceasing."
- A spiritually mature believer prioritizes prayer and fellowship with other believers. They understand the importance of a strong prayer life and being part of a community where they can be encouraged and held accountable.
3. **Consistent Self-Examination**
- **2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV):**
"Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves."
- Self-examination is a practice of mature believers. They regularly assess their spiritual growth, confess sins, and seek to align their lives more closely with God's Word.
**V. The Role of the Holy Spirit in Maturing Believers**
1. **The Holy Spirit as a Guide**
- **John 16:13 (NIV):**
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
- The Holy Spirit leads us into deeper understanding and helps us grow in wisdom and discernment.
2. **The Holy Spirit Empowers Us**
- **Acts 1:8 (NIV):**
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you."
- The power to live a godly life and to overcome sin comes from the Holy Spirit. He is the one who transforms us from the inside out.
**VI. Practical Steps to Grow in Spiritual Maturity**
1. **Daily Devotion in Scripture**
- Start each day by reading and meditating on God’s Word. Allow it to renew your mind and guide your decisions.
2. **Engage in a Local Church Community**
- Be actively involved in a local church. Participate in Bible studies, worship services, and small groups where you can grow alongside other believers.
3. **Practice Obedience in Small Things**
- Be faithful in the little things God asks of you. Obedience in small steps leads to growth in larger areas.
4. **Be Patient with Your Growth**
- **Philippians 1:6 (NIV):**
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
- Understand that spiritual growth is a journey. God is faithful to complete the work He started in you.
**Conclusion:**
Spiritual maturity is God’s desire for every born-again believer. It is a journey that requires effort, commitment, and the help of the Holy Spirit. As you walk with Christ daily, allow His Word to transform you, His Spirit to guide you, and His love to flow through you.
**Call to Action:**
Let us commit today to growing deeper in our relationship with Jesus. Let us pursue spiritual maturity with all our hearts, trusting that as we abide in Him, He will mold us into His likeness.
**Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the new life we have in Christ. Help us grow in spiritual maturity. May we be rooted in Your Word, guided by Your Spirit, and transformed into the likeness of Your Son. Give us the strength to endure trials, the wisdom to discern truth, and the love to serve others. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
