His work is among the exiled community, to the nations, and to the exiles as they prepare to return.

Visionary Apocalyptic language.

Interrogatories

Who

Ezekiel

He is a priest as well as a prophet. Like Jeremiah, he is born a priest but called to be a prophet.

Ezekiel 2:3–6 ESV
3 And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. 4 The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’ 5 And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them. 6 And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.

He name drops Noah, Daniel, and Job as examples of righteousness.

Ezekiel 14:13–14 ESV
13 “Son of man, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it and break its supply of bread and send famine upon it, and cut off from it man and beast, 14 even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness, declares the Lord God.

Oholah (Samaria=Israel) & Oholibah (Jerusalem=Judah)

Nebuchadnezzar

The Shepherds of Israel & God the Shepherd of His people

Ezekiel 34:15 ESV
15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God.
Ezekiel 34:23 ESV
23 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd.

What

Apocalyptic symbolizes the invisible nature of God

Clearly divided into sections dealing with punishment (before the destruction Jerusalem) and hope of restoration (after the destruction of Jerusalem).

Judah’s punishment for idolatry is envisioned in graphic Apocalyptic symbolism.

The heavenly beings symbolize the presence and unknowability of God

Promise of a new heart/spirit/covenant

Condemnation of false prophets

“The Soul who sins shall die…”

Ezekiel 18:20 ESV
20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

The siege of Jerusalem described and symbolized.

The nations are judged

The Work of the Watchman

Ezekiel 33:7 ESV
7 “So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.

Jerusalem destroyed

A new covenant promise

Ezekiel 36:26–27 ESV
26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Why

God’s particular interest in Judah extends to His general interest to the Nations.

Punishment is severe and just, restoration is of grace and restoration.

God’s presence is the sign that He dwells with His people.
