Washington’s Proclamation

WHEREAS, It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor;

WHEREAS, Both the houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness”!

Now, therefore, I do recommend next, to be devoted by the people of the states to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be, that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country.

—George Washington

Thanksgiving is to be Christian, Thanksgiving is inherently American. Do you see the connection? Proper Thanksgiving leads to proper relationship with everything else.

Thankfulness for God’s goodness

Psalm 100:4–5 ESV
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 136:1–3 ESV
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever;
Psalm 136:26 ESV
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Application:

You may have heard other pastors say it’s an attitude of gratitude. That’s true, your every coming and going is one of thankfulness. So put another way Christians should be known as whiners! Oh the whiny heart demonstrates the exact opposite of thankfulness.
Christians shouldn’t be stuck up. You maybe the children of a king but we shouldn’t act that way. Nobility doesn’t look down but build up. We are to emulate our saviour who gave up everything for others. That is the truly Christian way. A person who lays theur life down for others.
We demonstrate this through our worship.

Thankfulness for deliverance

From adversity

Psalm 35:9–10 ESV
9 Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord, exulting in his salvation. 10 All my bones shall say, “O Lord, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?”
See also Ps 103:1–5; Ps 31:7–8; Ps 31:21–23; Ps 44:6–8; Ps 66:8–9; Ps 66:16–20

From slavery in Egypt

Exodus 15:20–21 ESV
20 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”
See also Ps 136:1–26; Ex 15:1–18; Ps 105:1–45

From the power of death

1 Corinthians 15:53–57 ESV
53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Application:

A quick how to pray
Matthew 6:5–8 ESV
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Sermon Outlines on the Sermon on the Mount (Prayer or Proclamation?)
I. Condemnation—Christ Condemns Three Things
A. Method
1. Standing in the synagogue (looking for prominence)
2. Standing on the street corners (in plain view)
B. Manner
1. Impression: “that they may be seen by men”
2. Impersonation: trying to give the impression of spirituality
3. Intention: trying to look as if they were so earnest that they could not wait
C. Motive
1. Design: their end in view was the applause of men
2. Designation: Christ calls them hypocrites
3. Denunciation: He says that they have their reward already, thus ruling out future reward
II. Caution
A. Similarity: it is possible for us to be exactly like them
B. Selfishness: a subtle problem in prayer
C. Style: an undue stress on what we say and how we say it before others
III. Corrective
A. Secrecy: shut out other things (6)
B. Sincerity (7, 8a)
C. Simplicity: God knows all about your need before you ever get there (8b)

Thankfulness for answered prayer

1 Samuel 2:1–10 ESV
1 And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. 2 “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. 3 Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. 5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. 6 The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. 8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. 9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. 10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Examples of those who gave thanks to God

Jesus Christ

Mt 14:19 ; Mk 8:6
Matthew 14:19 ESV
19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
Mark 8:6 ESV
6 And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd.

30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.
; 1 Co 11:24
1 Corinthians 11:24 ESV
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Jesus who emptied himself on our behalf models thankfulness in his life.
He instructed men to give thanks for when he cleansed them!

Application:

You must model Thankfulness in your own life. This is done through you doing likewise, yes thank God for your dinner this night, yes pray before lunch. Yes pray for your family.
Men you’re the pastor for your families you must lead before them in prayer.

Paul

Ac 28:15 ; Ro 6:17 ; Eph 1:16 ; 1 Ti 1:12
Acts 28:15 ESV
15 And the brothers there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage.
Romans 6:17 ESV
17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
Ephesians 1:16 ESV
16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,
1 Timothy 1:12 ESV
12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,

Application:

Do you as Paul give thanks for one another? For our Church, for our country? How often do you pray? I was listen to an Anglican pastor who just moved to Michigan from the UK and his answer to prevent the slide to faithlessness over here is prayer. Another way is Christian practices. Prayer, giving, serving, caring for your family. Prayer works, your actions of the faith pay

Heavenly beings

Re 4:9 ; Re 7:12 ; Re 11:17
Revelation 4:9 ESV
9 And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever,
Revelation 7:12 ESV
12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
Revelation 11:17 ESV
17 saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign.
Thankfulness is something all those who serve god must do. So to the angels who maybe among us, keep up the praise of the Lord. My brother and sisters know that in heaven you will be giving thanks at all times
The last book is filled with praise and thanksgiving
