Getting the Most Out of It
Getting the Most Out of It
What does the Law do and how do we get the most out of it?
It displays the holiness of God.
Leviticus 19:2 ““Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.”
What does the passage I am reading teach me about God, His works, and His ways? How should that affect my love, obedience, and worship towards the Lord?
2. It shows us our own sinfulness.
Galatians 3:10 “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”” (Deuteronomy 27:26)
Romans 3:19-20 “Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”
What does this passage teach me about my own sin? Have I broken these commandments? Have I ignored these examples? What things have I done in this passage that disobeys and dishonors God? Are there sins I need to confess and repent of?
3. It shows us our need of a savior because we are sinful and can’t earn our salvation.
Romans 7:24 “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
Isaiah 6:5 “And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!””
Have you fled to Christ in repentance and faith? Let the passage remind you of your need of Christ. Let it fill your heart with thanksgiving that He has saved you from your sins. Worship Him for what He has done for you! Pray for forgiveness for sinning against the One who bore our sins on Himself.
4. It often uses signs, types, and shadows to teach greater truths.
Colossians 2:16–17 “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.”
Hebrews 10:1 “For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.”
What truths do these rituals, sacrifices, festivals, and various other things convey (things like the holy of holies, the sacrifices, the high priest, Passover, etc…) ? Do the actions and details that were commanded point to greater truths? What truths do I need to be reminded of from this passage? How should these truths shape the way I live and worship?
5. It often uses narratives to warn or encourage us.
See 1 Corinthians 10:1-13...
What can I learn from the actions of others in this passage? How should their faithfulness encourage me? How should their sin warn me? What are the consequences of sin? What are the blessings of obedience?
Some help with genealogies.
Genealogies confirm the Bible’s accuracy and provide proof of fulfilled prophecy. They also remind us that God knows and remembers all people. He knows our names and everything we have ever done. It shows that God cares about every single individual and the details of their life. We can be reminded of how the Lord worked in each individual’s life. We can be encouraged and warned. We can be reminded of the far-reaching consequences of our lives, for good or for bad. And finally, we can be reminded that no person can thwart the purposes and promises of God.
