exposition of verse 1
In the year of king Uzziah’s death
When
Who was king Uzziah?
King of Judah
reigned for 52 years
during his reign Judah became one of the strongest kingdoms both militarily and trading
he had built trading ports (for the ships), and very strong fortified cities (2 Chronicles 26:3-5; 8-10; 13-15)
there was a spiritual downfall during his reign as he attempted to merge the role of the king and that of the high-priest into one. (2 Kings 15:3-4; 2 Chronicles 26:16-19)
because of his sin, God’s judgment came upon him, Yahweh made him a leprous
In the year
for the kingdom of Judah it was a year of instability
they were in distress
during the reign of Uzziah they experienced stability, growth, wealth and now with this happening they were worried what would happen to them
I saw the Lord
Who—> Isaiah
What, he saw the Lord
the word used is Adonai, not Yahweh
Adonai meaning Master, a title of the true God with a focus on the authority and majesty of a ruler, yet also implying a relationship based in promise, covenant, or other relational factors
James Swanson, Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains : Hebrew (Old Testament) (Oak Harbor: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 1997).
In Scripture, the concepts of authority and omnipotence are inherent to the idea of divine sovereignty. The Lord’s omnipotence, we have seen, simply means that He is able to do whatever He has purposed. (Ligonier)
