Community Scripture Reading

1 Chronicles 16:8–10 ESV
8 Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 9 Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 10 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Greeting: Welcome everyone and acknowledge the significance of gathering during the Thanksgiving season.
Object Lesson Introduction: Bring a beautifully wrapped gift box and place it where everyone can see.

The Unopened Gift

Presentation: Hold up the wrapped gift and ask, “What would you do if someone gave you a gift, but you never took the time to open it?”
Explanation:
Unopened Gift: Discuss how an unopened gift remains just a potential blessing. It requires action to appreciate its value.
Parallel to God’s Blessings: Explain that God daily offers us countless blessings, but without recognition and gratitude, we miss experiencing the fullness of His gifts.
Application: Encourage the congregation to “open” God’s gifts through thankfulness.

I. Recognizing God’s Blessings

Scripture: 1 Chronicles 16:8-10
1 Chronicles 16:8–10 ESV
8 Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 9 Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 10 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Read Passage: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works! Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord.”
Teaching Points:
Call to Action: Emphasize the verbs—give thanks, call upon, make known, sing, talk, glory, rejoice.
Awareness of God’s Works: Discuss the importance of actively remembering and acknowledging what God has done.
Illustration: Share a testimony or story highlighting someone recognizing God’s intervention in their life.

II. Responding with Gratitude

Scripture: Psalm 116:12-14
Psalm 116:12–14 ESV
12 What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me? 13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, 14 I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.
Read Passage: “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people.”
Teaching Points:
Self-Reflection: Encourage asking ourselves what we can offer back to God.
Actions of Gratitude: Highlight taking up salvation, calling on God, fulfilling vows as responses.
Application: Suggest practical ways to respond—prayer, worship, service, obedience.

III. The Impact of Thankfulness

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:10-11
2 Corinthians 9:10–11 ESV
10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.
Read Passage: “Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.”
Teaching Points:
God as Provider: Recognize God supplies and multiplies our resources.
Generosity Leads to Thanksgiving: Our giving results in others thanking God.
Illustration: Share how a generous act impacted someone and led them to gratitude toward God.

IV. A Continual Attitude of Gratitude

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:18
1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Read Passage: “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Teaching Points:
Unconditional Thankfulness: Stress giving thanks in all circumstances, not just when things are good.
God’s Will: Emphasize that thankfulness is not just recommended—it’s God’s will for us.
Application: Discuss ways to maintain gratitude during trials—trusting God’s sovereignty, remembering past faithfulness.

Conclusion

Recap: Summarize the four main points:

1. Recognize God’s blessings.

2. Respond with active gratitude.

3. Impact others through thankful generosity.

4. Maintain a continual attitude of gratitude.

Return to Object Lesson:
Final Thought: Encourage everyone not to let God’s gifts remain unopened in their lives.
Challenge:

This Thanksgiving, let’s not just count our blessings—let’s express our gratitude to God and others.

Call to Action:
Personal Reflection: Invite the congregation to identify specific blessings they have overlooked.
Practical Steps: Suggest starting a gratitude journal or setting aside daily time to thank God.
Closing Prayer: Lead a prayer focusing on thankfulness, asking God to help cultivate grateful hearts.
Final Encouragement: Remind everyone that a heart of thanksgiving transforms our relationship with God and impacts those around us. Let this season be a starting point for a lifetime of gratitude.

Closing Community Prayer

Psalm 146 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! 2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 3 Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. 4 When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. 5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, 6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; 7 who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; 8 the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. 10 The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord!
