The Danger of Compromise: Standing Firm for Truth

Notes
Transcript
Central Idea: In a world filled with moral ambiguity and shifting standards, Christians are called to stand firm in their faith, resisting the temptation to compromise on truth, knowing that God provides the strength and escape from temptation.
OBJECTIVES
What is Compromise
Danger Signs of Compromise
Avoid/Reject Compromise

1. What Does Compromise Mean?

Compromise - "An ability to listen to two sides in a dispute, and devise an agreement acceptable to both"

On the surface, there’s nothing immediately wrong with this
This happens with salary negotiations, contracts of various kinds, family matters (concessions).
1 Corinthians 6:7 ESV
To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded?
This takes away my need to be right. Pride issue
Never compromise with God’s word

2. Danger Signs of Compromise

Prayer has become a difficult or forgotten activity.

Living a life of holiness seems like extremism.

1 John 3:9 ESV
No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

You no longer desire reading and understanding God’s word.

We’re at a point in Christianity where people don’t care if you can back a claim up with the Bible. Their feelings, desires, and emotions override what scripture says. They don’t follow Christ, they follow self.
2 Timothy 4:3 ESV
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
Proverbs 30:5–6 ESV
Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

You don’t share the Gospel because...

You don’t want to offend
You’re afraid
You don’t know enough
It’s not that important anymore
You doubt its validity

You desire/crave earthly things more than spiritual things.

This will result in spiritual stagnation and a lukewarm faith
Revelation 3:15–16 ESV
“ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

3. How to Avoid Compromise

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Recognize the Exit Sign
Know Who You Are
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
You are the crowning glory of all his creation
Genesis 1:26 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Inherent worth, value and dignity
Know Why You Are Here
Bring glory and honor to the one who made me and serve and worship him.
Colossians 1:16 ESV
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
What’s Wrong with the World
Colossians 1:21–23 ESV
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
CONCLUSION
1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
