Bible Reading Week 48
This Week’s Theme: Looking Forward with Hope
Word for the Week is Hope: A total grounding of one’s confidence and expectation in God’s goodness and providential care even in the face of trouble.
Memory verse: Romans 15:4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
Sermon Focus: We have a sure hope because Jesus came to us.
Sermon Passage: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11
1 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!” Says your God.
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is pardoned; For she has received from the Lord’s hand Double for all her sins.”
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth;
5 The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
6 The voice said, “Cry out!” And he said, “What shall I cry?” “All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
7 The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.
8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
9 O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
10 Behold, the Lord God shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him.
11 He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.
I. CALLED TO COMFORT
I. CALLED TO COMFORT
1 “Comfort, yes, comfort My people!” Says your God.
2 “Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is pardoned; For she has received from the Lord’s hand Double for all her sins.”
1 “(YOU: plural) Comfort (alleviate distress and/or give emotional strength), yes, comfort My people (Direct object)!” Says your God.
SPEAK WITH COMPASSION
YOU speak to the heart of Jerusalem.
HE CALLED FOR THE PROPHETS
Address her inmost feelings, her very spirit and soul
SPEAK WITH CONVICTION MY PEOPLE
1 Peter 2:9,10 (NKJV)
9 But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past [were] not a people, but [are] now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Isaiah 43:21 (NKJV)
21 This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.
Acts 15:14 (NKJV) “Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name.
COMFORTING ONE
25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
A. HIS WORKS
A. HIS WORKS
2 “[COMMAND] (YOUSpeak comfort (from the heart) to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is pardoned; For she has received from the LORD’s hand Double for all her sins.”
Cruel slaughter and captivity at the hands of the Babylonians were sufficient payment for past sins; so someday after worldwide dispersion, Israel will return to her land in peace and in the glory of Messiah’s kingdom.
B. HIS WILL
B. HIS WILL
God’s acts of salvation bring comfort because his people know that he has promised
to defeat their enemies
to establish his glorious holy kingdom (2:1–4; 4:2–6; 30:18–26; 35:1–10),
to set his eternal king from the line of David on his throne (9:6–7; 11:1–6; 33:17–24), and
to extend his love (rḥm) to his faithful followers who will dwell in their land
IS 11:11–16; 14:1–3; 30:18; 35:1–10).
II. CALLED TO CLEAR A WAY
II. CALLED TO CLEAR A WAY
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth;
FULFILLMENT SEEN IN JOHN THE BAPTIST
3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,
4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough ways smooth;
6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”
HIS MESSAGE
2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation
31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
JAMES COMMUNICATED THIS TRUTH
9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,
10 but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.
11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.
III. CALLED TO CALL OUT
III. CALLED TO CALL OUT
9 O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
GET UP ON THE MOUNTAIN
YOU WHO BRING GOOD TIDINGS
4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
LIFT UP YOUR VOICE
DON’T BE AFRAID TO TELL THEM WHAT? LOOK AT VERSE 10
10 Behold, the Lord God shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him.

HIS ARM SHALL RULE FOR HIM
HIS REWARD IS WITH HIM
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
