New Dictionary of Biblical Theology Themes in Esther

Proverbs 16:33 states, ‘The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is wholly from the LORD.’ There is no ‘chance’. The book of Esther clearly demonstrates that Almighty God has human affairs firmly under his control. It does so by reference to the surprising number of coincidences which serve to thwart Haman’s plans. Vashti’s deposition (1:10–22), Ahasuerus’ choice of Esther as his queen (2:17), Mordecai’s discovery of the plot against the king (2:21–22), Ahasuerus’ insomnia on a certain night (6:1), and so on, all serve to highlight the transcendence of God, without once mentioning his name.
