Luke is a gentile writing to another gentile. Therefore, Luke, being the detail oriented physician that he is, decides to write “an orderly account” of the life and ministry of Jesus, by doing research from accounts that had already been written, to present a clear presentation to Theophilus, so Theophilus could be certain that what he was taught was true.
Luke presents his account in 4 major sections: The introduction (1-2), the mission (3-9), the journey to Jerusalem (9-19), and the final week (19-24).
Luke’s gospel is unique in that Luke in both of his works, the gospel account and the book of Acts, presents Jesus as the savior of all humanity. This is why in Luke’s genealogy, he connects Jesus all the way back to Adam. This is to show Jesus as the blessing to the all humanity.
An interesting emphasis that Luke presents is liberating the “poor”. Poor could mean anything: sick, broke, outsider, slave, outcast, etc. This is seen in chapters 3-9a where Jesus heals the sick, paralyzed, and even calls the 12 disciples, who are all uneducated, poor, and one them is a tax collector, Matthew.
There is also a heavy emphasis on commissioning the twelve and the great commission given at the end of Luke which reinforces Jesus as the universal savior.
Luke 9-19: The Travel Narrative:
Luke 9:51 “Now it happened that when the days were approaching for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.”
All of Luke 9:51-19 is Jesus’ travel narrative where he is making his way back to Jerusalem.
