The Pharisees
The Pharisees
V 14
Were lovers of money
it was believed that being rich was next to Godliness
the rich were favored by God
the poor were out of Gods favor
V 15-16
God’s law has to and will be kept perfectly or the punishment is death
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
but for someone who has been saved we can say
“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
and we were with Jesus in His death
Or do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
so this is the setting of our next account
the Pharisees that are lovers of money
who think that because they are rich that they are going to be with God
The Rich Man
The Rich Man
V 19
dressed in purple regularly
only the very rich can even afford purple
and then only on special occasions
and only the best linen against his skin
Had no worries about anything
Joyously living every day
the Phrases are thinking
this man is surely blessed by God
this is the mentality of the day
But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
“And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
And when the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?”
And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
so everyone listening to this story thinks this rich man is going to be with Abraham
the father of the hebrews
the father if the faith
Lazarus
Lazarus
V 20-21
means "helped of God," "God helps," "whom God helps," "assistance of God
this the only named in this story
in fact if this a parable it is the only named
so Lazarus is very poor
probably a cripple because he was laid
wishing he could eat from the crumbs from the table that the dogs were getting
people would wipe their hand with day old bread
and throw it under the table
this man was also covered in sores
that the dogs licked
this kind of puts a damper on the prosperity gospel
where they say that God wants you to be rich, and healthy
Joyce Mayer, Joel Ostein and Benny Hinn probably don’t preach on these verses
this poor man died
V 22
the angels carried him away
his body was probably dumped in the garbage heap
what is this Abrahams bosom?
we have to understand the culture
the bosom is the chest area of the body
when a person reclines at a table one persons head is in the bosom of the person sitting next to him
There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
this is indicating the feast with Abraham that every good jew is looking forward to in the afterlife
this would be in Sheol -the place of the dead
where there is 2 compartments
paradise where the saved are waiting for the cross for Jesus to redeem them
and hades where the unregenerate go
so Lazarus who’s name means who God helps
is in paradise seated at the place of honor with Abraham at a banquet
lets look at the
Man in Hell
Man in Hell
V 22
he had a great funeral everybody was saying how good he was
How blessed he was how God had done great things for him
the scribes and Pharisees who loved money wanted to emulate him
the eulogy was sayng that paradise was a much better place now that he was there
BUT
he was not there in paradise
he was not with Abraham
the Pharisees listening to this story are dumbfounded at the thought of this poor man going to Abrahams banquet and the rich man
V 23
in torment
Jesus says more about Hell than heaven
Matthew 5:22 (LSB)
“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Matthew 18:8 (LSB)
“And if your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than, having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the eternal fire.
Matthew 22:13 (LSB)
“Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Matthew 25:46 (LSB)
“And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
V 24 -26
Have mercy on me
the end of mercy was at the time of death
the flames are forever
there is no hope
after a million years you will know that it only just begun
there is no drop of water
they are in solitary confinement
they are in complete blackness
with their remembrances to the wasted opportunities to turn to Jesus for salvation
V 28
He wants to evangelize
send someone to tell my brothers
I don’t want them here with me
so much for being with all your friends and partying
V 29
they have the word of God
they have the warnings that God has given
they have the way of salvation
V 30
no they need something spectacular
many people followed Jesus to get something from Him
they had no desire to be a true disciple
if someone came back from the dead
another Lazarus did come back from the dead
Jesus raised him
so instead of repenting they…
But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also;
because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.
wanted to kill him again
V 31
for true repentance someone needs to hear the good news
that Jesus died and rose again
they need to realize their sinfulness
and the holiness of God
realize that they need to be as pure as Jesus to be in the Fathers presence
they need to know that our sin has to be put onto Jesus
and Jesus righteousness needs to be put onto us
no spectacularness will ever save some one
it is the gospel
And only God can save
Jesus answer when the disciples asked who can be saved
And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
