We are kicking off our Christmas series this week called “Behold the Savior”
We are in the season of Advent
If you don’t know advent is the season where we look ahead with anticipation for the coming of the savior
It is the time where we look forward in remembrance of Christ’s birth
This year for Advent I want to look at a key passage and break it down for us over the next two weeks
I want us to have a greater understanding of why Jesus coming was so important
The passage I’m talking about is:
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The prophet Isaiah gave this prophecy 700 years before Jesus was born
700 years before Mary would become pregnant, 700 years before he’s born in a stable with donkeys, 700 years before any of that
Isaiah gets a vision and shares with Israel that there is a savior that is coming
There is a Messiah — the Mashiach — the anointed savior of the people
Notice that Isaiah tells us that this savior will have all the governments upon his shoulder
He will be in total control of all things
This was a beautiful message to the Israelite people who were at this point outcasts
This is a beautiful promise and reminder to us today that Jesus is in control of all things
He is in control of all government and ruling bodies
He is in total control
But Isaiah doesn’t stop there — although he could have
That alone is good news to us
But Isaiah also gives this savior 4 names
He says that he will be:
Wonderful Counselor
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
Prince of Peace
He said not only will the Mashiach be in total control of all governments, but let me tell you about his character
So that’s what I want us to spend our time on these next two weeks
I want us to look at the four names of Jesus and help us understand how they matter to us today
So today we will look at the first two names and then next week we will hit the other two

Wonderful counselor

The first name that Isaiah tells the Israelite people is that the Messiah will be a wonderful counselor
The phrase Wonderful Counselor is a combination of two words that means: doing something extraordinary “wonderful” while giving wise advice or plans
Jesus is the wonderful counselor — he works things out in a way that is beyond our understanding, but that is fully planned out from the beginning
We see Jesus as Wonderful Counselor in the plan for our salvation
From the beginning the plan was always for Jesus to be our way to come to God
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Isaiah 64:6 ESV
6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
We know that we are far from God in our sin
We cannot get to God because of our sin
We are eternally separated from God for all time because of our sin
That is where Jesus as Wonderful Counselor comes in
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
From the beginning — as soon as sin entered the world — we are told that there will be one who will crush Satan
He will stop sin and death
Jesus taking our place on the cross is what allows us to have life
It was planned from the beginning
God knew that in our sin we could not come to Him — we were destined for eternal punishment
So Jesus as Wonderful Counselor comes to take the place for us so we can have salvation
John 3:16–17 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Jesus exercised this title in offering forgiveness for our sins
We experience Jesus as wonderful counselor when we trust in his plan for our life and salvation
When we stop trying to save ourself, stop trying to fix ourself, and allow Jesus’ life, death, resurrection to be the means by which we are saved
There is no other way we can experience salvation, and no other way to experience Jesus as wonderful counselor
Him offering salvation is the wonderful counselor

Mighty God

The second title that Isaiah tells us is that this Messiah will be called “Mighty God”
The title Mighty God literally means that this Messiah will be God — not godlike, but God
We see Jesus as Mighty God in the miracles He provides
We see Jesus as Mighty God in miracles
Isaiah said that the Messiah would not be godlike, but would be God
That means that He would have to have the abilities of God
He would have to be able to heal the sick, control the environment, perceive thoughts
There are people in Scripture that God has allowed to do things — Moses, Elijah, Paul, etc.
But for Jesus to be Mighty God he would have to not be godlike, but God
All things we saw Jesus do
Jesus commands demons:
Mark 1:23–26 ESV
23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
Jesus healed the sick:
Matthew 8:1–3 ESV
1 When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. 2 And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 3 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Jesus controlled the environment:
Matthew 8:23–26 ESV
23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Jesus multiplied food:
Luke 9:13–17 ESV
13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
Jesus perceived thoughts:
Luke 5:21–22 ESV
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts?
These are all examples of Jesus showing that he isn’t just godlike — He was God
He is God
He is the mighty God that is in all control
We see this in life today when we realize that all miracles, all miraculous things are because of Jesus
The blessings we have, the people that show up in just the moment we need them, is because of Jesus
He is the mighty God that calms our fears, eases anxiety, provides for our needs, and so much more
Jesus as mighty God provides for us

Conclusion

We see Jesus as Wonderful Counselor when we think about our salvation
When we remember that Jesus was always the plan for our salvation — he is the only way
He saving is wonderful
And we see Jesus as mighty God when we realize the miracles that happen are because of Him
He is the one that calms seas and cures fears
