In this chapter John really lays on the question: Who is Jesus? This question as we will see, is a divisive one. Everyone has an opinion as to who Jesus is. Even today everyone has something to say about who Jesus is or isn’t.
Who does Jesus say that He is?
Who we think Jesus is is not nearly as important as understanding who Jesus actually is. If we aren’t careful we can take the picture of Jesus we have in our heads and shape it in a way that makes us comfortable until we have a version of Jesus that agrees with everything we say and do. That isn’t Jesus. Who He is and what He says is not ours to manipulate. When we are confronted with who Jesus actually is as He has revealed Himself to us the only response we can have is to receive Him or reject Him.
